If there was one corner whom I thought might struggle in Sean McDermott’s defense, it was Seymour. He is purely a mirror, man cover corner. He’s a defender who loves to use his speed and athleticism to get into the hip pocket of the receiver opposite him. As far as man technique, he has that down pat; from all reports out of Carolina, the Panthers want to play more man coverage this season than in years past.

In 95 run snaps last season, Seymour registered 3 tackles and a 1.1 run tackle rating which was tied for 103rd overall. He did excel in coverage in the 177 passing snaps that he played, only allowing 12 receptions on 22 targets.

That breaks down to a reception every 14.8 coverage snaps, tied for 8th overall.

 

Only issue is how he isn't a zone corner, lacking the physicality and length for the job. He's a bad scheme fit for McDermott. However, the Panthers appear to be switching to more man under Wilks, where we could see Seymour come in for. He locks down receivers pretty well.

Good depth, and a good add for packages. Will be interesting to see how the Panthers develop and use him.

Everything I have read says this guy is a Zone corner.  I'm not sure what you've been reading.

So this one thing I hate about the discussion. From my understanding, McDermott's base defense runs cover three zone. A zone corner in that system is responsible for the deep outside third and aligns in either a press-bail or off coverage. In many ways, the responsibilities are more similar to cover one or zero with man coverage than they are to a traditional zone look out a Cover 2. 

Considering in this defense the corner is going to have to turn and run just like he would in a traditional man scheme, I don't see why there would be a fit problem. We aren't asking him to sit in a zone and read defenses.

Darrelle Revis, Assante Samuel, Nnamdi Ashomugah and others have suffered poor seasons or outright downfalls by going to teams with poor scheme fits for their talents.

Better hope our scheme under Wilks is different enough from McDermott to work for this guy.

If Wilks keeps up pattern reading zone and man schemes for him, then he's a great pickup. I doubt he's the starter, but he'd be phenomenal depth and probably good in certain packages.

Or better yet, let's hope we don't even need  Seymour to play anytime soon.

Worley's the better corner overall. Still believe he'll impress this season, and his preseason performance was greatly exaggerated. 

His rookie season told me all I needed to know in my confidence towards him.

Seymour is good depth and great for certain packages, but don't expect him to push Worley anytime soon.

I have read this article and googled others.  They all say he's a zone corner.  This is the first i've read/saw he wasn't.  just saying.

Zone experience from college, but a straight man-cover guy with Buffalo last year. And a decent one.

Another big win from the Hurninator - instantly the best corner on this sorry roster.

It a corner has speed and fluid hips with good burst he can be taught to play man or zone. Rarely do teams use one or the other exclusively. Even McDermotts zone shells often required corners to play man on the outside so honestly the whole he is a zone corner and can't play man is often not that accurate.  Truth is most guys who are designated as primary zone corners lack the athleticism or technique seen in guys considered good press man corners or a shut down guy. 

Seymour has decent size and good speed to play in our scheme and he is a decent special teamer. He is clearly not ready to start over Worley and is clearly not our best or even our third best corner but he is young and has a reputation out of college as a tough guy although somewhat injury prone.
