Here is the thing.... John Kasay is one of the best field goal kickers in the league and when he retires, all you folks saying that it's time to let him go or he's over the hill are going to recognize that regardless of how *far* the field goal goes, it doesn't matter unless it goes through the uprights. I'd rather have a guy who can split the pins than a guy who can kick a field goal 20 yards longer than it should have to go wide right.

Kasay can still kick from 50 yards, and that is all you should ever ask of your field goal kicker. In fact, you should only ask from 40 and hope for 50. Kasay gives us a chance on every kick. I never expect him to miss one and when he does it's an absolute shock.

When the SAD day comes that Kasay no longer wants to kick for us, and trust that he will be around until that day comes, then he will retire and be remembered as one of the greatest kickers to ever wear the boot. I personally think he has extended his career by years simply because he doesn't have to kick off and risk injury.

If you want to pull the pin on anybody in our kicking staff, then look towards Jason Baker. Both Baker and Kasay are being used as specialists. Who is doing the better job and has been for the past four or five years? Let that one sink in. It's not all about Kasay vs. Lloyd. Lloyd is doing Baker's potential job too. There are punters that can do both.

I love John Kasay.

I hate saying what I'm going to say.

But this is a business, his inabilty to do kick-offs and fields goals costs a roster spot.

Other teams have kickers who do both, we had two of them Shane Graham and Nedney, they were fill-ins here when John was hurt...we let them both go to keep John.

Its time to find one who does both and use the roster spot for depth.

Another Hurney fug up.

The only memory I'll have of Kasey is kicking the ball out of bounds in the Super Bowl. One of the biggest choke jobs I've ever seen.

If that's your only memory of him, then just calling you ignorant is being nice.

And it's Kasay. Guy has been with us since the beginning and you can't even remember how to spell his name.

How many 50 yd FG are attempted a year? Kasay was 1-3 last year from that distance last year so do we keep 3 kickers? Absolutely not, with a 53 man roster you can't afford to keep 3 kickers. Was it worth it last year? Yes, because Llyod led the NFL in touchbacks and Kasay still had some leg left. This has got to be the last year for this trio. Only room for 2 kickers on this roster, how about trading for a gunner who can tackle?

John Kasay is an awesome kicker but I agree and at this point I think Lloyd is the better option, I went to the week 1 Eagles game and pregame he was kicking 50+ yard FGs.

He's not earning his spot this year. We should have the best KO return coverage in the NFL and yet we are the worst. 4 touchbacks this season = no contract next year.

You are f'ing dumb.

He has a higher kickoff average (70.1) than last year (67.8) and has a higher percentage of his kicks being unreturned this year (40%) to last year (34%)

The problem is that people are returning kickoffs even if they land 5 yards into the endzone, so it is a testament to what he is doing. Teams know we can't cover the kickoffs, so Llloyd has to get some serious hangtime to stop them coming out with the ball every time.

You seem hung up on the fact that he only has four touchbacks, but you are completely disregarding the oppotunities he has had to kick. He has only kicked off ten times. Our offense has not been putting up enough points to make use of him. THAT is more grounds for cutting him, not the amount of TBs. Even with our offense being pretty much useless you still keep him, because when our offense finally scores more than the opponents we can pen them back into their own territory.

Why oh why would you get rid of him when our special teams are 'that' bad? Lloyd is the only one on special teams doing his job!?

In regards to Lloyd doing field goals, we'll address that when the time comes. We'll need a full preseason of competition between him and another kicker to determine if he's able to do that full time. God willing Kasay sticks around for another three or four years and its a moot point.

We have ONE position on this team that is not worthy of consideration because the player we have there is good enough at what he does to not look into a replacement and it's field goal kicker. Granted, we have franchise guys at other positions but you simply use more WR and RB than kickers obviously.

In regards to Kasay being replaced, I remember a while back... probably 2002 or 2001 when Kasay was in competition with Shayne Graham for the starting job here. He was coming off of injury and Carolina had them split duty in the preseason. When Kasay eventually won, I was disappointed a bit because I thought Graham did a really good job and deserved the spot. However, in retrospect, it's awesome that we decided to keep Kasay because even though Graham has developed into a really good kicker in his own right, Kasay is a Panther through and through. I have never been happier to have been wrong about a guy being "done".

And it's still amazing to me how many people want to use Lloyd's roster spot for "depth". What the hell does ONE extra active roster player do for you anyways? One extra guy on special teams? One extra guy to run down the field and miss a tackle?

Again, we have NOBODY that is inactive every week that could make more of a difference in the outcome of the game than Lloyd regardless of position. Because, hello, even if they're activated it's obvious the coaching does not trust them enough to put them into pressure situations.

THIS!!!

Geebus...I could return kicks against the Cats and get 20+ yards.
