Interesting Fact: No SB Winner/Loser Has Ever Had A Losing Preseason Record The Past Nine Years

So, the Panthers are lucky enough to finish their preseason at a .500 record, thus avoiding the fate of having a dreaded losing season. Although preseason certainly doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things, the outcomes somehow correlate with getting to the Superbowl or not.

Take a look:

To put in perspective, no SB loser the past nine years has ever ended with a 0-4 record, and no SB winner has had a record worse than 2-2 the past nine years.

So to put in perspective, the Patriots and Falcons would be outliers if they sniff the big game again. The Falcons ended their preseason with a dismal 0-4 record full of blown leads and ineptitude while the Patriots ended with a 1-3 record.

The teams with a 2-2 or 3-1 record are most likely to get to the Superbowl based on these trends.

Interesting stuff. Meaningless, but interesting.

According to those numbers, it's almost as damning to go 4-0 in the preseason as it is to go 0-4. Zero 0-4 teams, but only one 4-0 team. Seems like 3-1 or 2-2 is the recipe for success.

Realistically, I only pay attention to the 3rd preseason game. I suspect there's a very strong correlation between winning that game and going on to having a winning record and/or being a playoff team.

Struggling right now. Lasik consultation today so I've had to wear glasses for the last two days. I never wear glasses out of the house. Probably the first time in a decade at least. This poo sucks. It's way different than contacts.

I want to get lasik but it fuged a buddy of mine up and has made me paranoid

This is one of those fun interesting factoids, but I don't put too much stock in it.  I have no idea how far back the trend goes.  Maybe it's kaput after 9 most recent years... I didn't look any further back in doing research on SB losers, since I was only responding to the pre-existing tweet about last 9 years.

Perhaps more important for the Panthers is that we've gone at least 2-2 in the preseason in every playoff season we've had.  Given our tendency to start slow, the fact of winning at least 2 preseason games (especially week 3, I think), may show whether or not the team has decent depth and is getting in a rhythm.

You should change "interesting" to 'meaningless'. The '82 Redskins lost all 4 and won the SB. The 200 Giants and '90 Bills made it to the SB. About a dozen other teams lost 'em all and still made the playoffs. Preseason W/L doesn't really say much except maybe about your depth. Even then .....

Since the falcons are 0-4, I'm going to irrationally cling to this as gospel.

Exactly.  ATL being 0-4 and NE being 1-3 makes this a stat to crow about right now - just to make those fan bases feel bad, even if it's meaningless from a longer historical perspective! :)
