Another COMP pick thanks to GMan thinking long term and being responsible in the early months of 2014, and for taking a kid out of nowhere that wasn't even on the ESPN or NFL Network draft radar.

Good, the Panthers need all the extra picks they can get after several years of trading up for duds.

Loser: Russell Shepard. Not just for this game, but for the entire preseason. We gave him a pretty decent contract with the hopes that he'd be a core special teamer while also contributing as a WR. He had 1 catch for 5 yards on 7 targets. Yikes.

To be fair, his QB play was atrocious when he was on the field. I would have liked to see what he could do with Cam in there.

WINNERS

- Kaelin Clay : Could he possibly beat out Damiere Byrd? He's just as fast and is a bigger playmaker.

- Ben Jacobs : very solid performance with 6 tackles.

- Dezmen Southward : 7 tackles performance and the fact that he can play free safety gives him a spot on our 53.

LOSERS

- Zack Sanchez : just when he was about to make the team (maybe) he suffers a groin injury.

- Joe Webb : was outplayed by Garrett Gilbert and threw 2 picks.

Totally agree on Clay stepping up.  WR #5 may come down to who is PS-eligible and/or "safe" on the PS between him & Byrd.  I think we only keep 5 WR.  WR5 battle is firmly between Byrd & Clay.  Bersin to IR or cut.

Jacobs looked good.  I've always liked him, but had thought Norris was going to win this spot.  With Norris injured, I think Jacobs gets LB6.

Southward.  Pretty confident he's safety#4 (#3 being Colin Jones).  McCray released or IR.  If we pick up a guy like TJ Ward that may bump off Southward, but hard to say.  I don't know much about Ward to know whose spot he most threatens and whether or not we might keep 5 safeties for ST / versatility.

Poor Sanchez.  Hope his injury is not serious.  This could mean he gets sent to IR to start season.  We're in a mess regarding CB depth.  This is the position we most need help from the outside.

Gilbert did look awesome.  Very much hope we keep him.  Webb wasn't his best, but the O-line also didn't play so well tonight at times.

-----------

Other winners / losers:

Winners:

CAP & Fozzy both.  Think we will keep all 4 RBs.

Crume.  Pretty sure he will take Love's roster spot.

Webster.  Made some nice plays.  PS I think.

Mixed:

Cole Luke.  Made some stupid plays followed by some great ones.  He may make the roster just because we're out of bodies at CB, but I don't think he's really ready yet.  But he shows promise.

Byrd:  2 bad mental errors and yet some nice play too.  The mental errors may have been enough to give Clay the WR5 spot.  Not sure...

Palardy / Lee:  I don't feel well qualified enough to evaluate.  I think this really is too close to call and will come down to whether we have any interesting offers for Lee, how desperate we are to free up cap space, etc.  I really like Lee.  Would be glad to keep him for a SB push this year.  But Palardy's youth, low cost and left foot could win him the job.

Loser:  Gano.  I know 51 yards isn't automatic, but he's lost the fan base support for sure.  Not sure about coaches.  But he really doesn't seem to have confidence / consistency.  I'm now firmly in the get rid of Gano camp.  Not sure Butker is better, but he's certainly cheaper, and don't think he's WORSE than Gano.

A bit concerned about:  2nd team Tackles.  Moton & Silatolu definitely were not as sharp as we needed them to be last night.  But of course they weren't playing next to Turner or Norwell either.  If we ever need 2+ 2nd team Oline in we're probably in bad shape, but that's likely true of most teams.  I think Moton & Silatolu are probably ok playing next to Norwell & Turner as backups... But Moton not a starter yet, I don't think.

Disappointed in Moton. Has looked good overall, but he got beat bad at least twice without going back and rewatching

Amini will get exposed by speed rushers if he's forced into duty.

OT still a concern

I just wrote much the same thing.  My consolation is that if Moton or Silatolu go in, they'd likely be next to Turner or Norwell, and with Ryan at center, not playing with a line of all twos & threes...  Our strong interior definitely helps make all our tackles better.  Put them in next to guys like France or Folkerts and they're going to look worse.

Unfortunately there's a chance he's a better guard than tackle.  But, if he is, gives us insurance in case we lose Norwell.  One of the reasons Star is more important.  Time will tell of course.

Not so sure about this. You could be right.

My thought is that Cam wasn't playing, and I think we wanted to get looks at guys below Shepard.  I think we knew what Shepard can do, and I saw him make some great blocks that definitely helped the offense even if he wasn't targeted / pulling in catches.

I'll have to look, but how do Shepard's 7 targets compare with others on the team, and who was throwing them.  DA had some wildly inaccurate throws.  Were the 6 targets not caught Shepard's fault or some other problem.  T I listened to most of the preseason on radio, so I can't speak to this and would be interested in others'' opinions.

In my opinion Shepard certainly didn't shine and didn't help himself.  He was kind of a non-factor, but I just don't know how much of that was the play calling and our poor QB play without Cam.

I don't think you can call Sanchez a loser, up until he got hurt he was balling out there.  To call a player a loser only because of injury is just wrong.

Sanchez may get my most improved player vote.  He really stepped up the past few games.  Working with Captain seems to be really really helping him...  I'm much more optimistic about him than I have been.

Both should make it over Shepard

KB

Samuel

Funchess

Byrd

Clay

Can't wait to see Shepard make the team easily and become a contributor as soon as someone decent throws him the football.

I mean if Shepard was a fringe player you'd think he'd have more playing time with the 3s/4s, but he's always out there with the 1s and 2s.

Yeah, I'm not looking too much into it but after the positive reports in training camp tbwas disappointing to see him do pretty much nothing in the entire preseason.
