Seriously. Please keep Butker if not just so Gano doesn't get anymore demoralized. He can't handle twitter hate, and I'm sure the pressure of ticked off fans over the Panthers not cutting an incompetent expensive kicker instead of the cheaper option will get to him.

A lot.

If at all, just do it for the PR.

I don't hope GUYNO GETS hurt but I really hope there's a situation where he just can't play and someone else has to fill in for him that's when we'll see truly what we have in  Bucher but I doubt that's going to happen if godno is healthy and willing to play Ron just not getting it he's very stubborn and set in his ways and that's the worst when you're in a sport where you have to constantly evolve and get better or because of your stagnation you get left behind that's exactly how sports are in most cases and Ron

We are all talking about how done he is, but knowing how Rivera operates, I believe he is going to stick with Gano.

Of course he is.

That kick last night wasn't the typical "4th preseason game last gasp for FA and rookies" appearance, it was the obligatory "time to get you warmed up for the regular season for all the FG's I choose to kick on 4th and short" for Field Goal Ron.

If I'm Hurney I'm taking a look at the Brown's K Battle. Rather have either Parkey or Gonzalez over the ones we have.

Gonzalez has the potential to be great, I hope they cut him and we scoop him up.

I actually doubt we would have taken Zane over Harrison in the 7th.  We targeted Butker for a reason and passed on Zane in the 6th.  Many teams passed on Zane after some were saying he'd be a day 2 pick!

Don't get me wrong, if he's out there I'd be interested.  But not before giving Butker a chance at this point.

Someone on reddit did a good analysis on kickers from college and did a real in depth analysis using certain distances and accuracy ratings and metrics and what have you. Zane was the best of the kickers that came out the past few seasons. Butker was more accurate than Gano I believe. Aguayo was dead last.

That was an excellent article. Good pull.

Let’s recap.

  1. Field goal percentage is a horrible way to measure the talent of kickers when distance makes such a large difference in the percentage of a field goal attempt turning into points.
  2. The difference between kickers is measured in kicks of 40 yards or more.
  3. Roberto Aguayo was a bad kicker in terms of long field goals before he entered the NFL, which should have been a massive red flag during the draft process.
  4. I spent too much time analyzing kickers.

Except for Gano.  His percentage of kicks from 30-39 yards last years was the same as his 40-49 yard kicks, 82%.  Which puts him near the bottom for 30-39 yard kicks.

I was confused by one point. It looks like Zane Gonzalez had a much better Expected Points value in College, but his team (Cleveland) did even worse than Aguayo last year. I think the takeaways from this are, #1 - Aguayo was majorly mis-evaluated (pretty obvious now). #2 - Take analytics with a grain of salt b/c the best in his metrics did even worse than Aguayo. #3 - Maybe Butker has a chance if the analysis holds true for him.

Regardless. I liked Gano, got frustrated with him last year, but was truly hoping his plant foot injury was the issue. But at this point you've got to be concerned about him going full-Delhomme. When a kicker loses it mentally it's done. I don't know of any cases where a kicker lost his mental game and recovered. It's time to cut bait and hope for the best with Butker or trade for a reliable Kicker.

I hated letting Kasay go when we did, but it's really showing now how consistent and valuable he was in retrospect. Kickers like that are not a dime a dozen.
