Gano Misses Another

Why shouldn't he be considered good? He's made every kick presented him in the preseason. He made both field goals (one 46 yards, one 51 yards). And he's made all his extra points. Why does he have to look like a superstar in practice? Why can't he use practice to try making small changes to his form, etc?

Now I haven't been to training camp this year (and I know you have), so I haven't seen him. Maybe he's missed 60+ percent of his kicks in the training camp. Maybe he's been awful from 40 yards in during training camp. If that's the case, excuse everything I've said. If not, isn't practice the place where you're supposed to be able to miss kicks? Maybe he's missed in practices because he's taking chances (as a way to improve himself) that he doesn't take in games. Idk. I'm just spitballing, because like I've said, he hasn't had a misstep during a game.

Not saying it's the case because I also wasn't there, but a lot of kickers in practice and in warm ups aren't even kicking to try to make the kick. They're being a lot more precise than that. They're kicking to try to actually hit the goal post.

When the pressure is on Gano misses. The regular season is all pressure so why even tempt fate. Go with the cheaper younger guy. If he messed up oh well but Gano has proven he can't handle the pressure anymore.

Solid, not great. Certainly not good enough to have earned the contract we gave him. We're paying him like he's an elite kicker.

Mistake by GMan but hopefully corrected with the only drafted kicker in Panthers History.  So good he's never missed a kick!

Yep, we know what we have in Gano. Can't go with him. Go with Butker, but have an itchy trigger finger and have some unemployed vets on speed dial.

We'll see. Maybe Gano really did fug himself tonight. I'd give Butker a chance. IMO, Gano has thoroughly proven that we can't count on him. Give the rookie a shot and be ready to call some vets for a tryout if he screws the pooch. I'm comfortable with the fact that if he does screw the pooch, oh well, Gano would've too so nothing gained nothing lost.

I'm just pissed that they didn't give Butker the chance on that one. How can he compete for the job if they won't let him?

I think back to the hard knocks episode after they cut Aguayo...  They're reasoning was Aguayo was great in practice, but they couldn't trust him in games, whereas they knew what they were getting with Folk regardless of his practice.  I haven't heard much on Butker's practice showings, other than they have been very similar.  So, i think the deciding factor is, between the two, which one can they trust more in-game?  Hopefully, it's Butker.

I started out on team Gano, but at this point I just can't argue he should be kept over Butler.

The only argument for Gano at this point is he is better on kickoffs, but that isn't enough to balance out his cap number and the fact we have a draft pick invested in Butker.

He might not be any better, but at this point I legitimately can't see Butker being any worse than Gano, and as long as that's the case, he should get the job until he proves not up to it.

Just an aside - I find it pretty amusing that it was the trade for punter Andy Lee (which many of us criticized as too expensive) which gave us back a 2017 7th pick (we'd traded it for SEA WR Kevin Norwood, I think,  back after KB tore his ACL), which we then used to draft a kicker.

It certainly has been interesting to have BOTH punter & kicker battles this offseason....
