Until we have an offense that can sustain a drive and a defense that can keep us in the game we are always going to be playing from behind and in third and long. No way we can have a good running game when we have to sling it to catch up.

well we're not catching up slinging it so why not give the ball to the guys we put so much of an investment in draftwise more often, who aren't doing that bad when they get their carries anyway.

I like the idea of running it, I just think that we need to balance things out and throw as well as run in order to sustain some drives. Teams are stacking the box and we are going to have to be more creative to spread out the defense in order to get Williams and Stewart the ball outside of just straight quick hitters and power running sets.

Teams have been stacking the box against Deangelo since his college days. The staff need to quit abandoning the run on a series the first time he gets tackled for a loss or no gain. My experience watching him over the years is not, if he will break one, but when will he break one, regardless of the defense.

One more thing I would say distinguishes Deangelo from most backs is his combination of vision and acceleration. Notice, I am not saying his top speed. Typically, if there is any hole available, he will find it. Once he does, he accelerates through the hole so quickly that unless the defense is already in pursuit, he is already past them and its too late. IMO, this is why he has so many long gains. It's like the defense looks up and he's already gone before they can react.

I don't think its abandoning the run when they put 9 people in the box and you throw it. You could see in the Atlanta game how running lanes started opening up when Jake started completing passes. This is the second year of Davidsons offense and I expected to see a little more creativity. That being said, getting Deangelo more touches cannot be a bad thing.

i definitely agree.

i'm not saying run to daylight, but mix it up more, Davidson isn't going to fool anybody playing pass, pass, pass when defenses expect us to do so, and Delhomme is not beating anybody with his arm.

If he gets enough carries he will break one but the problem is that we are often too predictable. We have begun to throw it more on first down but almost always run on second down. It leaves us too many times in third and long which often equates to three and out. In order for Williams to succeed he needs to wear out the defense and get 20 - 30 carries minimum. That only comes from extending drives. If we used him out of the backfield like Philly uses Westbrook he would get to the second level more often and be out there with safeties and corners where he is very dangerous.

You compare the attempts, not the years. Remember that D-will wasted away sitting behind Fumbling Foster for a few years.

And it was his own fault that he was "wasting away" behind Foster. This has been confirmed about 1,000 times already. Williams himself has admitted that he wasn't picking up the pass pro concepts.

Anyway, they are throwing the ball to Williams. This notion that Jake refuses to use him is ridiculous and ignorant.

Tell me the basis for believing Jake won't throw to Williams or Stewart. Williams is the third leading receiver behind Smith and Moose while Stewart is the 4th. In fact he has thrown more to the backs than he has to the tight ends.

Do any of you guys actually look at the facts before you make these unfounded opinions.

ehh, why would anyone want to do something silly like that?
