3 is fine.

4 is iffy.

5 is stupid.

I'll be in my house for a 3, at a concrete older place here in town for a 4, and probably heading for Boone if there is a 5 on the way.

I've stayed during 3's in the past, but boy can they test your mettle in the middle of the night.

Yes, 100MPH + winds will freak you the hell out.  Nothing quite like it.  The eyes of Fran, Bertha and Floyd went directly over my house in the late 90s.  We were here for Fran and Bertha.  Tore the back door off the house during Fran, but otherwise didn't lose a single shingle.

Since then Charlie and last year Matthew went over us...  Matthew had some decent gusts but nothing like Fran.

Flooding isn't an issue at our place, I would be worried about the wind.  Our current house was built in 2006 so it hasn't seen any of these storms yet, minus Matthew.

If it looks bad, I'll probably send my wife and younger son to my older son's apartment in Raleigh and I'll go stay with my parents so I could possibly get back quicker after the storm... just have to see.

Yup.  That sound, when the power is off, and it's pitch black out....is something else.

My house has been through all of them, with little damage, but it's also not seen a direct strike of a 4.

I have parents that live on a barrier island, so they will likely come to my house, but nothing set in stone just yet.  If you need anything, please reach out, if I can help, I will.

Thanks brother... should be good.  I'll look at it Saturday and decide what to do.  Same to you if I can help...

I mean... other than going extreme and boarding up the windows... not much you can do but take stuff inside so nothing blows around and hope for the best.

You should say that to a meteorologist. They love hearing stuff like that.

Lets test that theory, shall we? @Superadiabatic what do you think? and whats your input on the Irma situation?

You won't see me contradict anything that Brad Panovich said in the video linked above. He's one of the best in the business. And the Charlotte TV market is blessed to have a collection of very sharp meteorologists at WCNC and at the other stations in town.

The trends we're seeing in the model guidance today look pretty ominous for the Carolinas. It's still early in the game (call it the start of the second quarter) for interests around the Carolinas, so much can still change. We've already seen one 'wipe of the windshield wipers' with the guidance west into Florida then back to the east again. We likely will see the models shift around some more.

My hope and prayer is that in the end that Irma ends up curving east, staying some distance off shore and we mostly dodge a bullet. But, the odds for that look to be very low at this point.

I'm with Brad Panovich in saying that there's no sense for those in the Carolinas going into panic mode right now. But, you'd be foolish not to take some basic disaster preparation steps. I've been telling my blog readers this for days now. Do the things that emergency managers will tell you that you should do, anyway. Like, for example, make sure that you have enough non-perishable food and water on hand for you and your family to last a few days and means to cook it. Consider any special needs you might have, like prescription drugs that you rely on. Maybe go ahead and fill your car's gas tank and be ready to top it off again later. Maybe make sure you have a couple of gallons of gas and a supply of 2-cycle oil for your chainsaw, if you own one. If you live in a mobile home or very old or otherwise not sturdy structure, consider other places to ride out the storm if it later looks as though your area will see high winds. As those who lived through Hugo or Fran know, a major hurricane can do a lot of damage well inland, cause floods, knock out power for days, and so forth.

If the current guidance we have from the models remains fairly consistent, then you'll start to hear the words "Hugo" or "Fran" pop up in comparisons to this storm in the coming days. I'm already hearing some comparisons to Matthew from last year, but Irma is starting stronger and happening more than a month earlier, so warmer waters would also sustain the storm's strength longer. I know all that sounds scary, so I don't say that lightly. I'm not sure if Brad Panovich purposely avoided those comparisons because he didn't want to get people in a panic or if he didn't realize potential similarities because he wasn't here back in 1989. Either way, he's ridden out a couple of hurricanes during his time in New Orleans, so he knows what the bad ones can do and will be a good source if it gets to looking bad for this area. I will say at this point that a Hugo-like event is a reasonable worst-case scenario. We do average roughly 3 such every century, so we're about due from a statistical standpoint.

So, the bottom line for now ... let's hope for the best but let's be prepared. Basic stuff and general planning first, for now, then more hard-core stuff if the forecast continues to look bad in the coming days.
