Sobering Cam Newton stat...

I think there are a number of former GM's who would disagree about that.

Across the board during the draft very few people had Newton as the best quarterback in the draft let alone the consensus #1 pick.

Cam was a risky 1st overall pick, but absolutely the right one.

Then again, almost every single QB that is highly drafted is a huge risk.

The safe pick would have been Von Miller, but we chose correctly.

just imagine Cam with an OLine that can protect him and an OC that understands what is going on?

For us he was the right pick of course, in terms of franchise trajectory he was the only pick for us.

Anytime you are picking #1 overall it's risky. Which is why I had to scoff at drafting Newton as being an "easy" decision overall.

The hits are cumulative...they pile up on you, and make your job harder.  Cams arm will not stay where it is, Cams feet and legs won't continue to be as responsive as they are....if he keeps taking these hits.

Cam is the most important player on the Panthers, we have to protect him, and we have to protect him from himself.

Sure. But Cam rarely takes big hits on designed runs. Why Cam gets hit most of the time is because he tends to stand in the pocket too long (or the o-line gets him killed). If the Panthers want to protect him, they better fix their passing game.

False Cam brings defenders competitive nature out.. defenders try harder to get those hits in on scrabbling cam vs Derek Anderson scamper..

also cam can be dramatic at times so it's probably fun to see what you can get away with tagging him up..

Cam getting hit while running is not nearly the same problem as Cam sitting in the pocket and getting tee'd off on. (Granted, he needs to run less.)

Bad line play and Referees with an agenda to humble a dabbing young MVP really put Cam in a tough spot last year. Everyone keeps saying that Cam had an off year.... but who wouldn't with those kind of factors.

It's easy to make those decisions when you have the #1 pick in the draft.

not really, most GMs probably wouldn't of taken Cam at #1.

People act like first rounders are teed up homeruns waiting to happen

Look at the last 10 number 1 overall draft picks.  Some strike outs, some guys that while good don't really seem worth the pick etc.

Cam does bring the hate and competitive nature out.....but as a runner he still rarely takes big hits.  Ones that stick out most he showboated into the endzone and could have been EASILY avoided.

I have had the same stance on Cam since 2011.  I am not worried about him getting hurt running....his biggest risk as always been in the pocket where he can't protect himself.

The one's who needed a QB would have taken him.

I have no problem with him getting contact when running.  He protects himself on those hits and I imagine those hits take much less of a toll.  It's the head shots (numerous example throughout the past few season, but week 1 last year is the most glaring example) or low shots (Calais Campbell last year) that are the problem.

some still wouldn't of.   Plenty of GMs admitted Cam wasn't the number 1 QB on their board.  They wanted safe and traditional.

    • Yeah that with the Taylor Moton clip from yesterday...These guys have felt completely hamstrung the last two weeks
    • Our receivers were right there on the field, they also watched Bryce on film, and it sounds like they're looking forward to Dalton. Xavier Legette on Andy Dalton: "He got a fine understanding of things. I like the way he throws the ball and how to position it, so I feel like we going be good... On the go balls, he knows the right timing and the right among of air... The deep ball that's something I feel I'm good at, and that's something I been working on at practice [with Andy]... I ain't talked to him [Bryce] about it [the benching] yet, but we just got to continue to play. Next man up, and it's Andy."   Diontae Johnson on Andy Dalton: "A vet who's been back there for a while and knows the game, so once you have a guy like that back there, it allows you to be yourself more... He takes a lot off our plate just by having that experience knowing what to do, getting us the right calls, knowing when the pressure is coming..."
