Since we don't have a 4th, I'd trade a 3rd for Ward + 4th.  Our 3rd should be low in the round and their 4th would be higher (no pun intended).... in theory.

Ward might not be Ed Reed, but he would be the missing piece to our defense that would balance all of the weaknesses and question marks at DE and CB2. He would be a rental, so I'd prefer a 5th honestly, but Ward for 1-year I think puts us amongst the top-2 in the NFC.

I was thinking same, we would only loose a few spots.  BTW everytime I see your name I think of Bob Marley

Seems like we've always been safety poor. Mike Minter is really the only quality long-time player we've ever had at the position.

We've had a number of good safeties that just didn't stick or declined in play. Chad Cota, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris, Deon Grant to name a few. Most teams don't have big name safeties... hell it's seen as a position you can stuff older corners at. TJ Ward wouldn't be here for 7 years either.

Based on what we already have on the roster... TJ Ward doesn't make a ton of sense. 1 year contract... we already singed a pro bowl veteran safety. Ideally we would have gone young in the draft.

Huddlers love Dave Gettleman yet we have 1st round picks playing back up snap counts on the defense and no long term investments at safety.

I certainly don't have a problem with the Panthers trying to save draft and cash currency by skimping on the safety position. We can't afford to be loaded at every position, as is pointed out nearly every day on this forum. However I believe in loading up the roster when your QB is in his prime. Cam is well aware his prime has to be now. We need to win now. Now is the time to spend. When Cam is old we're not winning the SB imo. Our window is right now. Get the fuging safety.

Most teams have had a great safety. Minter is as close as we've gotten.

Safety didn't used to be a premium position, but with the NFL becoming more and more pass happy it's becoming a premium position. Who's the last over the hill corner who successfully transitioned to safety? Maybe Charles Woodson? Is there one currently in the NFL? 1st round safeties have become commonplace with multiple safeties going in the 1st not uncommon and the top safeties often go in the top half of the 1st and sometimes top 10. Our franchise just seems to have an antiquated view of the position.

Ward is an unspeakable upgrade to Adams.  But, assuming we keep both, Ward and Adams are former teammates in Cleveland and by all accounts are friends and have a great relationship.  We NEED additional help at safety.  Everyone knows it, even Marty who has no ties to anyone in our safety corps.

These late trade deals makes me believe they are trying to get something and if they don't they'll release him.  I have no idea why any team would want to get rid of a pro bowl player unless they have a plan.

What I feel is that they have someone ready to step up and play the position at a similar level.  They have other players on their roster they want to keep.

I would wait until Saturday and see if they release him.

You may not be able to have All-Pro players at every position, but there is a minimum level of acceptability. Our safety play has been below standard, and you can't make luxury picks at one position at the expense of another position on a yearly basis and expect to win in the end. At least a semblance of balance has to be achieved. If you're rich at one position come draft time and continue adding gold to that position, then you have to address other areas with FAs or UDFAs. Sometimes you get varying degrees of good talent with UDFAs, but there is really little excuse (at least in my opinion) to not address a weakness with a FA that can at least be good enough to help you compete at a high level during the postseason.

Stop it. Gettleman's draft stargety was 100% correct. He was the perfect GM.

Would love to do it as long as Marty doesn't get fleeced. Gotta remember, Ward is 30 and in the last year of his contract. 4th rounder maybe?

For all the crap the guys gets for the Jerry-stamped extensions, he is the guy that got Greg Olsen for a 3rd lol.  I'd love for him to pull this off.
