He received no praise for 2015 because he had nothing to do with it. The NFL didn't fall for it either. Shula got no interviews for a head coaching gig. Not one call.

You Shula supporters astound me.

So Cam was drawing up every play in the dirt in 2015 instead of running Shula's offense?

Always good to have new folks posting topics, helps keep this place interesting!

Totally agree with you.  This article on Shula compared with the one on Wilks yesterday.   There's just no comparison.  Wilks is clear in setting a very high standard.  Shula seems happy to roll out the excuses.

As for quoting text, once you've copied and pasted your excerpt, highlight it, and then click on the quote marks in the tool bar.

Any monkey could draw up or call a play. Cam's athleticism, arm and improvisation got us to the dance. However, once we got there, we got outsmarted.

I warned folks on the eve of the Superbowl. We weren't doing anything special. We were just overpowering and bullying other teams with Cam.

You can stop this pity party for Shula. Very few will attend.

There is no pity party. I'm just trying to bring some common sense to counter the incessant group think that refuses to allow for the fact that Cam is allowed to audible and to not throw to the long option if he doesn't want to.

Thanks, I have always wondered that as well.  We need a tutorial post explaining all the rules for posting topics and explain how to use all the functions

"perhaps part of the Week 1 plan will be to mostly eliminate vertical routes in favor of shorter, higher-percentage passes?

"No," Shula replied. "We feel like he is on track to make all the throws that we need him to make.""

Not saying that it is true, but why would he answer that question by saying "Yes, we are going to focus on the short routes".  Keep defenses wondering...don't give them a roadmap, even though fans want to know.

So everything good was Cam, and everything bad was Shula.

......

It's people like you who make people Shula apologist.

Any monkey could draw up or call a play?

See that's the point, no matter what Shula does, either Cam will get the credit or Shula the blame.   There is no middle ground.  I mean it's like following the live gameday thread.  Shula calls a good play, people say.  Way to go stew, cam, cmc etc....   Play fails, stupid shula calling a pass in obvious pass situation.  Even in 2015, when we were scoring 30+ , everyone saying.. "Cam must be calling the audibles".   It's crazy.  I'm not even trying to say Shula is an offensive genius, but he takes far too much blame locally and Cam takes far too much blame nationally.

So what part was an excuse? Cam and Curtis have missed a lot of time and are behind in their mastery of the offense. Curtis is not a big deal but Cam is a huge one. This is his offense and he directs everything. If he isn't ready it totally sets the offense backwards.  That we are still installing the offense and we aren't going to be able to use everything given we want to stay with what we have mastered and what we can play fast with.  Then when he gets pigeonholed to give away part of the gameplan he says Cam will make all the throws. Which he would say even if it isn't true. No coach is stupid enough to divulge your gameplan in an interview.

What amuses me is huddlers who think that Shula would tip his hand and tell much of anything to the media. All he said was the obvious and what anyone who has ever coached or played would  know.

Anyone who says that because Cam had two good games when he was a rookie as a justification for him being fine now forget that his rookie year Chud told him everything to do and he had no responsibility for really reading defenses and acting accordingly.  This year is much harder given he runs the offense and has total ability to change plays and call audibles. In fact the offense is predicated on him reading the defense and then adjusting the play to create a mismatch on the defense.

I've said all along, Shula is good at drawing up plays for the run game.  He's a glue sniffing, paint eating OC drawing plays with his boogers when it comes to the passing game.  That's middle ground.

He's also terrible at situational playcalling too, for what it's worth.

Problem is he isn't the one calling situational plays. That is what Cam is supposed to do. Shula gives him a play based on down and distance with various options both run and pass that can be run from that formation. Cam is supposed to read the defense and pick the right option or goes with the play but modifies  the blocking assignments or direction of the play to make it succeed based on what he sees from the defense.
