Shula on week 1

Panthers Mobile: Mike Shula's offense trying to make up for lost time
http://yi.nzc.am/cDvuKX

So those expecting the Panthers to unleash "the future of football" when they open the regular season Sept. 10 at San Francisco may need to pump the brakes a bit.

"I think the biggest thing is guys are just now getting back healthy," the Panthers’ offensive coordinator said Monday when asked for a progress report on his unit. "So the time on task among the guys – like Curtis (Samuel) and Cam (Newton) – we're still kind of at the early stages because we haven't been together."

That doesn't let the offense off the hook for Week 1, of course.

Even if Newton plays Thursday against Pittsburgh to double his preseason drive tally to two, his timing with receivers could be spotty for at least another few weeks. Yet in less than two weeks, the Panthers will be expected to produce points against a defense that was the NFL's worst last season.

"We don't have time to be concerned," Shula said. "What we have to do is make sure that when the opener gets here, whatever we give our guys they feel real good about knowing what they're doing and they can play fast."

Newton wasn’t the most accurate thrower even before he underwent shoulder surgery, so perhaps part of the Week 1 plan will be to mostly eliminate vertical routes in favor of shorter, higher-percentage passes?

"No," Shula replied. "We feel like he is on track to make all the throws that we need him to make."

As soon as I saw this article, I knew it would be used to bash Shula. Would you all rather he lied to you and told you that Samuel is ready for the pro bowl and that the timing between Cam and his receivers is in mid season form? Would you rather he show all of his hands in week 1? What could he possibly say that would make the slightest bit if difference in whether you're going to bash him or not?

I've got enough faith in Shula and the players to think we'll do fine against a long-floundering 49ers team.

The guy catches a lot of the flack for last season, but none of the praise from the one before. Maybe one of you Madden experts would like to send your resume` in to the folks in Charlotte?

Should always have one deep route. Want to make the opposing team account for every part of the field. Generally speaking.

I just want to see Cam getting the ball out quicker and taking what the D gives him.

Too often he ignores the short open routes and tries to force a pass deep or holds on too long and gets sacked or throws it away.

Nothing. Blaming Shula is the way to get instant pie around here.  Doesn't matter if it's crazy to believe we need to totally revamp the offense when all we needed to do was fix OL and upgrade skill positions.

Never posted a topic before so I am not sure how to put the text in boxes like I've seen you guys do but I thought this article was interesting. Not to sound like another Shula basher, but damn if it don't sound like he is already making excuses lol

Always good to have new folks posting topics, helps keep this place interesting!

Totally agree with you.  This article on Shula compared with the one on Wilks yesterday.   There's just no comparison.  Wilks is clear in setting a very high standard.  Shula seems happy to roll out the excuses.

You make good points, and I am not usually a Shula basher.  But I do think it's unfortunate that the two articles on Wilks & Shula came out on the same day.  The contrast is pretty stark.

Wilks seemed aggressively focused on improving - even when the play in question turned out well, he was looking for teaching points.  Shula just comes across as too laid back,  too willing to use the excuse of injuries and waiting to finally jump start the offense when everyone is finally healthy.  Cam's surgery and Ryan's surgery weren't surprises.  Somehow you have to work around the limitations to develop the best possible game plan in spite of the obstacles.  There will ALWAYS be injuries.  I hope in spite of his seemingly casual attitude, Shula has actually aggressively come up with game plans that account for the likelihood that Cam will be rusty and timing may be off in the first few games.

All he's saying is that they're not going to do anything the players aren't ready for. That doesn't mean that won't be trying to sustain drives and score points.

    • Hey guys, remember when we won those meaningless games in 2010 and it cost us the #1 pick and the chance to draft Cam? Oh.... right I get that's more of an extreme example because it got us a HOF caliber QB.  But it's the general concept, you want to win late season games when you have the pieces in place to make a run the next season, we currently are not in that place. Herbert and Sewell are the ones I point to so much, because we literally lost out on 2 franchise different makers by 1 draft slot.  Give us those two players while we still have CMC, Moore, and the rest of the picks we gave up for Bryce, and we'd have been a legit playoff contender the last few years. Draft position matters in the NFL more than any other sport (other than the #1 pick in the NBA in a year with a generational talent).
    • It’s so crazy. If we had a shot for pick 1 and there was some generational player there then yeah maybe I could get behind the draft position argument. I’d say most GMs and coaches aren’t diving into the draft right now. They are trying to win games.
