If he's truly "even" (which he's been SUPERIOR in fanfest/actual preseason games), then you still have to go with the cheaper kid with bigger upside.

Don't forget the Patriots letting Vinatieri go for an unknown from Memphis named Gostkowski.  Butker may or may not be Gostkowski, but Gano DAMN SURE ain't Vinatieri.

For the second time. Vinatieri was signed by the Colts a month before the draft. Gostkowski was not an unknown either.

That situation has zero similarity or relevance to this one.

I know that.  The Pats made a business decision to not pay what the guy wanted and quite frankly deserved-in hindsight it was the right decision.

Our decision should be a slam dunk.

I really think you're letting your Gano hate get in the way here. Butker misses a ton of kicks in practice while Gano is hitting them. "If" this is truly a competition (I don't believe it is) then it's nowhere near a slam dunk for Butker

Gano blocked me on twitter when I gave an honest assessment (without even tagging his user or anything) about him being bad last year.

Yeah, Gano needs to go. Can't take criticism and tries to avoid it rather than let it motivate. I mean even Takkarist McKinley actually liked a critique I had of him and didn't get butthurt about it and knows he can get better, but Gano just blocks away.

Aren't you glad we made him one of the highest paid kickers in the league?

I didn't hate the guy until he repeatedly let everyone down.  The guy has made a ton of money to do a piss poor job.  He should not have been let on the bus after missing the XP in New Orleans after we roared back to potentially tie.

Butker has had a helluva spring/summer.  For any person it would be.  Getting drafted, moving to a new place, new people, environment, etc.  Big fat deal he's missed some practice kicks.  I don't care if he's missed a lot of practice kicks.  He's been money so far under the relatively bright lights of BOA, has big potential, and proved last year with his 8-8 from 40+ and 50+ yarder to tie at the buzzer rival UGA in as tough of an atmosphere as he will face in the NFL he deserves a shot.

Like I said....your Gano hate and past letdowns from him are your motivation here. I don't necessarily disagree - we deserve better. But the coaches care when you don't perform anywhere near as well in practice as the person you're competing against. I mean, imagine using your "I don't care how he's performed in practice" sentence for another player/position. It doesn't make sense. Of course you care how they practice and of course you use that in evaluating who makes the roster.

saving 3 mill should be a deciding factor too. That and one hasn't missed while the other has.

But how bad could he have possibly been in practice?  Evaluating kickers is a different animal.  He's been clutch in his past and everything has been new this summer for him, so SOME leniency must be given.  If it's THAT BAD, which is hard to believe, then call Dan Carpenter or find someone else.

He's been very noticeably worse than Gano. I agree that a vet has a better chance of replacing Gano this season than Butker.

Beyond the discussion of who is better between Gano/Butker, one obvious thing we should all be able to agree on is Gano is overpaid, and we need someone more consistent at kicker. This isn't anything personal against Gano. Actually I was going to bat for Graham 3 years ago when people were calling for his head when he was missing extra points. But it's clear he is the same kicker he was in Washington, and we need to improve ASAP before he costs this team another crucial game.
