1. Colts

Peyton Manning is having a career start to his year and that is a dangerous thing, because even typically sound strategies against him, such as winning time of possession, have done little good if any against the Colts so far. The defense is equally impressive, only allowing 15.5 points a game

2. Giants

The Giants are taking full advantage of a relaxed schedule, and with Oakland coming up there should be no reason not to see the Giants at 5-0. If the team can get healthy they should be in it for the long haul, especially now that Eli Manning is finding reliable targets in Smith and Manningham.

3. Saints

The Saints' passing attack has slowed down considerably in recent weeks, but only to give rise to a much improved rushing attack over recent years with Mike Bell and Pierre Thomas. The defense deserves a lot of credit, Gregg Williams has given New Orleans a defense capable of taking them deep in the playoffs.

4. Vikings

Early indications are showing Brett Favre to be a good impact in Minnesota, provided he can stay healthy. The Vikings may not be seeing the production from Adrian Peterson they would normally like, but they are finding ways to win games without putting it on his shoulders.

5. Patriots

The Patriots are winning games but there are serious concerns about their inability to score points in the red zone, It has improved but not at the rate the Patriots would prefer. Taking the burden off of Brady has helped though, allowing him to be more comfortable throwing the ball.

6. Ravnes

The Ravens are understandably upset about some "Roughing the Brady" calls, which ended up extending drives which lead to touchdowns. However, the defense seems to have lost some of the intensity we have normally come to see from Baltimore, something they may wish to find by season's end.

7. Broncos

Mike Nolan must be a hero in Denver, turning around a defense that couldn't stop anybody from scoring last year into a defense that only allows 6.5 points per game. The Broncos may be for real if their offense can get started up, but with their defense it may not have to.

8. Jets

The Jets' defense continues to play well enough for them to win games but the offense has turned into a major liability, becoming unable to move the ball effectively and creating too many turnovers. Even with a fairly lenient schedule, they can't afford not to address the offense.

9. 49ers

Mike Singletary has finally turned the 49ers into the team many expected them to be a few years ago. While the injury to Frank Gore may prove to slow them down, hey should be back after the bye to help give the 49ers a shot at the division title. The real key to the 49ers however, is defense, just how Singletary would want it.

10. Bears

Despite a close first half against the Lions, the Bears turned it on in the second putting up 27 points, something Bears fans may take some time getting used to. Cutler has played well so far despite a horrible first game effort, and more importantly it seems Forte is finally hitting his stride.

11. Steelers

The offensive production picked up with Mendenhal finally giving the Steelers some semblance of a running game, but for once it's concerns about the team on defense that lead many to question the Steelers. The defense collapsed against the Chargers, it's obvious they need Polamalu back and in a big way.

12. Falcons

The Falcons are heading into a tough bit of the schedule with three of their next four games on the road and against quality opponents. How they come out of the bye will impact the rest of their season, and the offense will have to be at the top of their game with an inconsistent defense.

13. Eagles

Philadelphia has had some tough injuries to start the season, but the Eagles are hoping to turn things around especially with the emergence of Kolb over the past few weeks. One does have to wonder about the Michael Vick project, which may take longer to iron out than the Eagles have patience for.

14. Chargers

Many teams would quit after going down 28-0 but the Chargers fought back and turned it into a competitive game almost entirely in the span of a single quarter. The defense and running game have to improve if they want to win the division, let alone find themselves in the playoffs.

15. Packers

During the bye week the Packers need to find some semblance of a rushing attack to help take some pressure off of Aaron Rodgers, because he is getting pummeled so far this year having been sacked 20 times already. The defense did a good job of stopping AP but had no answer for the Vikings' passing attack.

16. Bengals

The Bengals may be 3-1 but the record is quite deceiving, as evidenced by their struggles against the worst team in the league last Sunday. The early success against the Packers and Steelers may have been as a result of two teams caught sleeping but the schedule stays tough and they will be lucky to stay above .500 before the bye.

5. Patriots

The Patriots are winning games but there are serious concerns about their inability to score points in the red zone, It has improved but not at the rate the Patriots would prefer. Taking the burden off of Brady has helped though, allowing him to be more comfortable throwing the ball.

Their D has quietly stepped up to be a big part of their winning, that's why they have been able to get away with suckass offense. This last game was their most complete, granted they had some luck to win that one.

6. Ravnes

The Ravens are understandably upset about some "Roughing the Brady" calls, which ended up extending drives which lead to touchdowns.

That crew who worked that game (Winter's crew) has led the league in called penalties for 2 years straight I believe. Whenever there's a new rule, I find that the officials have a very hard time calling it consistently the first year. Plus at times it gets over-called for the sake of "caution". He took far worse hits long after the ball was released vs the Jets that never got called than anything in the Ravens game that got called IMO.

True but it's still unacceptable, even people who are staunch supporters of the rule are having a hard time with those calls. I mean when Rodney Harrison, a former teammate, calls you out on national television for being a whiney bitch there is something wrong.
