The Hollis Thomas effect?

You're right. Aside from the fact that Thomas is a proven veteran NT and Hypolite had never done anything in the NFL, they're exactly the same.

What does that have to do with the effect they have on this team? Ok, Hollis Thomas was once a formidable NFL NT, and Hypolite has never done anything. If neither of them are any good right now then what's it matter for the 2009 Carolina Panthers?

It has everything to do with it. Hypolite wasn't even the kind of DT the Panthers needed to replace Kemo in the first place, much less a proven commodity. If you have your mind made up that Thomas can't play anymore though, I guess you're right. I just don't see any reason to assume that he can't play as long as he's healthy.

thomas brings a whole lot more to the table than hypolite. thomas may be well past his prime and it may just be intangibles that he brings but still, thomas > hypolite.

beason is pretty happy with thomas being brought in. he wanted a big and solid vet presence and he has that now. he passed his physical so he must not be too pathetic. he'll be just as good or better than anyone we have had this year. he knows what he's doing and i think if he can stay healthy he could help out a lot. the only concern that i have is his staying healthy. other than that he will be fine.

I'm sorry that my post was misunderstood. I was simply making a prediction that Hollis Thomas will not add much to this team. I'd love to be wrong, but I'm just not seeing it.

Based on what though? Is it because he got cut from the Rams, because that don't mean much since they were trying to get him to play the 3 technique.

Or are you just trying to say that nothing will ever help this defense? Because I don't believe that either. They will all get better at executing the new scheme. Every team that runs this type of scheme has taken a while to adjust to it.

We're already in full swing in the regular season. Anyone still looking for work is probably still out for a good reason. Pickings are slim, and trying to find someone to be an anchor for your defensive line via free agency will probably not be met with much success.

It'd be different if we were in the market for a special teamer. We're talking about a guy who can play DT well enough to keep blockers off of Beason. Those don't grow on trees. If they did, Kemo going down wouldn't have been a big deal.

Which is why HT was about the best we could have hoped for. He's an experienced vet who's niche is playing the 1 technique, which is exactly what this defense needed. He will most certainly be better at it than Nick Hayden, who is not built for the 1 technique or experienced at playing it.

He was out of work because the Rams are rebuilding and were playing him out of position anyway. As long as he's healthy, he will definitely make a difference.
