Problem is the Bills aren't trying to be competitive. They realize they are in a cycle of mediocrity, so they are going to compete as best as they can and when they suck, so be it. Them having 6 picks and the potential that their pick will be really high is the plan.

Or maybe 14 years is just long enough. How is this even remotely controversial?

Who said anything about controversy?

All we're alluding to is the fact that the Bills' state of affairs made his decision a lot easier. I mean, he was obviously thinking about playing another year---even lasted until the second preseason game---but retired rather surprisingly considering it looked like this may have been his farewell tour.

The have been several player who have retired since camp started and 14 years is a long long time to play WR in this league, so it's kind of leap to blame the Bills for his retirement, IMO.

Did I blame them, or say that their present state of affairs probably helped make his decision easier? Plus I gave you a reason as to why he was likely vacillating. I'm sure that playing a long and successful career was likely the priority determination. What in the hell are you debating?

Nothing, I suppose, except that I just don't think the Bills state of affairs had anything to do with it.

It's why everyone including the league needs to use their brains and use a reverse draft order for rounds 2, 4, and 6.  The incentive to tank would still be there, but would become MUCH less.  Competitive balance is kept, hope at landing a generational talent would still be there for the tankers, but good teams aren't punished as much for being good.

Imagine you're a 14 year vet who has had a very successful career, enjoyed playing on some pretty good teams, and you're wearing down both physically and mentally. Do you really want to slog through another year and put your body through even more abuse for a team that doesn't have a shot in hell of even being decent? If that fire is starting to burn out, that'll completely douse it. I have to imagine that if he was on a team that he felt could legitimately compete it may have kept that fire burning. Maybe not, but the Bills' situation certainly didn't do anything to convince him not to hang it up.

If that's the case, then why wouldn't he just ask to be traded or released so he can go to a contender instead of retiring? Also, why do we even care?

Release? It's still a business. He still has some value. Hell, why even sign in the first place? You're not going to tell me that he wasn't strongly considering playing this year?

I don't care in that sense. I wish him well. As for why I even brought it up at all is for trade scenario purposes in reference to the team.

I like to do that---think outside of the box.

14 seasons? Ugh. I remember watching him as a rookie and it really doesn't seem that long ago.

He and Fitz were two of the most exciting and complementary duos in the game for a few years.

Dude was tough as they come. That reception where he got helmets to the head from either side was hard to watch, but his coming back in a short amount of time was remarkable.
