Potential Safety Cuts

With the safety position being arguably the weakest position on the roster, I have compiled a list of potential cuts from the safety position. Feel free to add anyone you think I missed.

Arizona: SS Rudy Ford- Drafted out of Auburn in the 6th round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Ford could find himself on the outside looking in due to a stacked safety room. Ford is said to be average in coverage but solid in run support and he brings some pop as a tackler. Ford led the Cardinals with 10 tackles in the Hall of Fame game against the Cowboys, but he has been sidelined with an injury ever since.

Baltimore: FS Chuck Clark- Drafted in the 6th round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Clark is known for his consistency and his versatility with the ability to cover the slot. Pro Football Focus compares him to Adrian Amos of the Chicago Bears. Clark has 3 tackles and 1 QB hit in his two preseason games with the Ravens.

Buffalo: SS Bacarri Rambo- Rambo has had a less than stellar career and graded out as the 88th ranked safety in 2016. The Bills recently brought Rambo back but he could easily become expendable if the Bills elect to go with special teams ace Colt Anderson. Rambo has 1 tackle and 1 QB hit in one preseason game with the Bills.

Chicago: SS Harold Jones-Quartey- HJQ is a three year veteran out of Findlay who has bounced around the league a bit. HJQ is a typical in the box safety but his up and down play could lead to his exodus from Chicago. HJQ graded out as the 69th safety in 2016. Jones-Quartey has 1 tackle in two preseason games with the Bears.

Cleveland: SS Ibraheim Campbell- Campbell could be a surprise cut for the Browns as they now have the ability to roll with Peppers and they have more depth at the safety position than they've had before. Campbell graded out as 85th safety in 2016. Campbell has not suited up for the Browns in preseason as he is currently out with a concussion.

Dallas: SS Robert Blanton- Blaton is expendable simply because the Cowboys have younger options to go with at this point. The only issue with Blanton is that he's not a cover 2 safety. If Wilks incorporates more man, then Blanton could be a solid backup. One may remember Blanton's superb play in 2014 before his play began to tail off over the past few years. Blanton has 3 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, and 1 QB hit with the Cowboys this preseason.

Denver: SS Jamal Carter- Carter is an undrafted free agent out of Miami and I'm sure he'd love to join up with his buddy Corn Elder. Carter has been making noise this offseason with the Broncos but he finds himself on a roster with a stupid amount of depth in the secondary. Carter led the Broncos with 6 tackles, 1 QB hit, and 1 fumble recovery in the Broncos opening preseason game.

Kansas City: FS Steven Terrell- The Chiefs signed the former Seahawk but they could easily end up releasing him as they are loaded in the secondary. Terrell has seen his play on a slight incline since joining the league a few years ago. He was rated as the 75th safety in 2016. Terrell has 7 tackles and 1 pass defended in two preseason games.

Los Angeles Chargers: SS Dexter McCoil- McCoil, a former CFL standout is a huge safety at 6-4. The Chargers are really high on this guy but he may lose a roster spot due to the numbers game. Though he didn't qualify to be ranked according to pro football focus, he did record a 61.6 grade in 2016. To put that in perspective, Colin Jones recorded a 43.4 rating in 2016. McCoil has 4 tackles through 1 preseason game for the Chargers.

New England: SS Jordan Richards- The former 2nd round pick is buried on the depth chart and could lose out to the numbers game. In limited action he's been a solid player but there just isn't enough reps for him. In limited reps, Richards graded out with a 70.9 rating according to pro football focus. In two preseason games with the Patriots, he has 10 tackles.

New York Jets: SS Shamarko Thomas- Thomas was a somewhat highly touted player out of Syracuse and has managed to put together a couple solid games with the Steelers but he could never string together multiple good games. He may earn a roster spot with Middleton on IR now for the Jets, but his roster spot is still in jeopardy. Thomas has 4 tackles and 1 tackle for a loss this preseason.

New York Giants: SS Duke Ihenacho- Ihenacho has struggled a bit since entering the NFL but has managed to keep getting opportunities. He's injury prone and was ranked as the 80th safety in 2016 but he may be better than what's on the roster. Ihenacho has 1 tackle in one preseason game with the Giants.

Philadelphia: FS Jaylen Watkins- Another case of there just not being enough room on the roster. Watkins graded out as the 66th safety in 2016 and actually performed adequately. He could be a solid backup for the Panthers. Watkins has 2 tackles this preseason.

Flash cut to @Saca312 penning an 1,800 word dissertation on how Mike Adams is actually the best safety in NFL history, based on preseason "film".

Lol. You can look up my search history where I do say Mike Adams may be a slight upgrade over Roman Harper, but does have some of the same issues.

Jack Tocho, Vikings 7th Rd pick from NC State, Independence High School.  I've read he looks good and is a likable kid with upside, just may barely get squeezed out of their 53.  Here's hoping.

He looks average at best...4.5/10 I suppose.

Im going to get crucified and laughed at for this, but what about old man Harper?  Knew our system, could start week one and not have a huge learning curve, him and Kurt were pretty dang good together when we had good CBs, which it seems we have yet again. Unless he officially retired?

Very good stop gap IMO until we find someone much better.

All I know is that we need to be watching for additional options at safety. You can't tell me there won't be better options available than Jones and McCray. Neither of pur starters are spring chickens and Adams is flat out old for an NFL DB. We have to have better depth behind these guys. Really cussing Gettleman right now for knee jerk cutting Boston. Yeah, Boston wasn't starting caliber but he was netter depth than Jones and McCray.

This would be my pick of the group.

it sure would be nice if we had a master scout / talent evaluator to fill in the weakness at safety before the season starts.
