The "terrible" offensive display today got Ron's dander up

top dawg

Well, I did say in today's practice thread that today was a wakeup call.

Ron Rivera wasn't pleased today by a lot of things according to David Newton's afternoon article.

"We can’t have that if we expect to win football games," Rivera said. "We can’t do the things that we did today. ... If you expect to be great, you’ve got to be great every day."

Yes, it really speaks to a lack of consistency. I'm too lazy to imbed the tweets (you can peruse the thread), but I believe that it was Voth who basically said that it's still safe to be concerned with a lack of separation with the receivers. It may have been Voth as well, but somebody tweeted that the offense was without a lot of vets. I thought to myself, "That's not an excuse." Coach Rivera agreed.

“It doesn’t matter, because the guys that dropped the balls were guys that got opportunities," Rivera said. “They were good balls that got dropped. When the ball hits you in the hands, you’ve got to catch it."

And, yes, the recently ascended Byrd was one of the players that he was most certainly referring to---perhaps mainly referring to with multiple drops. The criticism wasn't only about the wideouts (yes, a TE or two had a drop as well) though, it extended to the line.

“The guys in front have to block. Those are things we didn’t do well today, and because of it we didn’t look very good."

Now if you didn't think Ron was mad, take a look at what he said of Kaelin Clay's flag after spiking the ball.

"Yeah he deserved a penalty," Rivera said. "You don’t do that kind of bullsh--. You really don’t. And I’ll have a conversation about that with him.

“It makes no sense. Now in a critical situation where you need to move the ball forward you just went backwards."

Clay needs to be particularly careful given his situation, but all the guys better be careful of Ron today. He ain't playin' and if some of these guys don't get their heads in the game, then they may not be playin' either.

Voth refers to the same Rivera quotes, but here are his opening comments in his article.

How poor did the Panthers' offense look during Thursday's joint practice in Tennessee?

Well, when wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin caught a 2-yard touchdown from quarterback Derek Anderson at the end of the session, Titans linebacker Wesley Woodyard labeled it "a participation medal" for the visitors.

The defense was solid, including Cole Luke according to USA Today's Tim Weaver:

Backup cornerback Cole Luke continues to make a strong case for himself to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

Luke had a sharp training camp and he added a couple of nice pass breakups while in coverage against the Titans during today’s practice:

As long as CMC is killing it we gonna be alright!

What the hell is wrong with you?

We haven't had an offensive player that is this fun to watch since Cam came into the league.

Your shtick is getting awfully tired.

Im all for fun football. HOwever some of yall are comparing him to HOF running backs.... This is absurd and very HOMERish

Good lord.

When a player is drafted highly in the 1st round, that broke Barry Sanders' single season all purpose yards, and looks to be the real deal at the next level as well...it's fine to compare him to other running backs that played a similar game.

What the hell is hard to understand about that?

He looks like Marshall Faulk and Shady McCoy when he runs and catches...that isn't saying that he will be a HOF'er.  It's not saying that he is better than them, nor that he will have even half as good as a career as them....it's just a comparison.

Would you like it better if we compared him to Eric Shelton?
