The Panthers FO Could Learn Something From The Bucs Kicking Competition

Like I stated elsewhere, what is keeping Gano here is his kickoffs. The staff had stated as such in the past that they value his ability for touchbacks. That's not saying his struggles with key field goals are a problem but it's an advantage he has that any potential replacement will have to narrow enough to convince the staff to pull the trigger. If Butker can't knock the ball deep enough in preseason, I don't think we're making the move.

Man, I just messed around with Spotrac and if we release Teddy Williams, Gano, and Dickson, we save roughly 6 million.

That's 6 million we can throw at Norwell immediately.

Its still pretty difficult to invision Gano getting beat out by a rookie. The only way I could see that happening is if they both are on the final roster and Gano starts missing kicks in the regular season. Otherwise its too much of  a gamble for the organization to trust a rookie kicker that much.

Like seriously, is it really that fuggin hard? Teddy, Gano, and Dickson have done absolutely NOTHING for us. Cut the dead weight and use that money towards a player worth a damn. I swear, some teams just make is so damn hard on themselves for no reason.

I think the horrible special teams coverage of Rivera's early years here has him wanting to stick with a kicker who gets a touchback almost all the time. Thus Gano is the favorite. Personally I would rather have Butker kicking to the goal line allowing them to run it out. If the special teams is just decent they can stop him before hitting the 25 yard line. Unfortunately I don't think Rivera wants to take that risk.

Taking advice from a team that traded up to get a bad kicker might not be advisable.

Larsen has outplayed Gradkowski, he's making a decent amount too. I can honestly understand an argument to keep Dickson over Gradkowski for depth reasons, so substitute those two and you still have roughly 6 million in savings.

So how is it possible to know you can rely on Butker at this point? So far he has had one kick in a pre season game in a non pressure situation. If he had two chances, who knows if he would have missed one of them just like Gano did?

But like I said, time will tell. We need a larger sample size to determine that. Butker could just as likely start missing kicks, and the advantage will automatically go to Gano.

To be fair, Butker made one FG that game, that's it.

I don't trust either one of the kickers. Gano because he is Gano, and Butker because he is a rookie.

pretty much everyone was bad last year, it was contagious. in 2013 he was 24 out 27 and over 80% every year here before last.
