I'm confused.  Who is taking his place as of now?  Shaq is already a starter.  You think Cash is ready to start and be an upgrade.  Give me a break.  A measly one year deal with only 2 million of that guaranteed is nothing for a pro bowl LB who means so much to this team.

The 3rd LB in our group is essentially a backup role it's so limited. With most teams having 3 wideout bases, slot corner is the other starter for the most part. Captain will be playing a ton more snaps over TD if Shaq truly does take TD's every down role, which he should.

Wrong , he will still be playing at high level,

That's questionable, and even if he is his snap count won't justify it. In 2018 he'd somehow have to be better than last year AND be playing a significant amount of snaps, which would mean less for Shaq which is not a good thing. Just don't understand at all paying him starter money past this year.

Too much for what should be a backup by then. Love TD and it is only a year but this doesn't help the team.

When people talk about the best 4-3 lb group they talk about the Panthers... they include Davis in the discussion... he's still pretty freaking good.

I'm not disagreeing, I do think we have the best 4-3 LB group by far. But mostly because of Luke and Shaq being able to step in and make the transition of TD's aging easier. And the main point is that while we technically run a 4-3 defense, it's in reality a 4-2 most of the time. If we were actually playing like half our snaps with 3 LBs then okay fine, but TD will see the field like a third of the time if Shaq's starting, which he needs to be. You can't pay him that much to play a third of the snaps. Of course his leadership and role in the locker room is invaluable but ultimately, deals like this paid to aging veterans who won't be or shouldn't be starting do not help the team win football games.

You're right but not in the majority. I love TD but nobody in the league would pay him that much even if they don't have a Shaq, therefore it's not good.

Its a legacy payout and nobody deserves it more but it's not how the best organizations operate.

Wtf? TD starts and gets handsomely paid on like 20+ NFL Teams if he were a free agent at this moment.

I absolutely can't wait to trash you lot shitting on him when he makes a big play.

SMH.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he only guaranteed $3 million next year? I'm assuming that means there are incentives built in to the contract to protect the Panthers, no? I'm no Hurney fan by any stretch but I'm not going to bash him if he doesn't deserve it and I don't think he does, in this case.
