This really isnt about which player is better or more gifted, its about who is the most professional and doing what they are paid to do. On that front Allen is many leagues above Peppers.

Jared Allen looks better doing it. He flails around and yells and does poses after sacks. Everyone says , "wow look at his motor". Peppers gets sack and pumps a fist and everyone says "Try harder".

Aaron Rodgers could not step up into a pocket much last night. The Williams were manhandling in the middle. Jared Allen also was full throttle last night (Could be that it was the backup LT). Jared Allen got the sacks and was working it last night, but it wasn't ALL him. The D-Line and secondary were playing very well.

Its not about who is better or more gifted??? Well damn, I've been arguing the wrong point for a while now huh. Even in a "professional" sense I would rather have Peppers quiet demenor than Allen's big mouth and stupid dances after each play. The guys is such a douche bag, I would hate him even if he was a Panther...in a "professional" sense.

Without going through the whole thread, I'll say this much.

I'd have to agree that Peppers had more raw, physical talent and ability than Jared Allen. Peppers is a physical freak like you'll rarely find. That's why the Panthers have kept him. Because he should be nearly unstoppable.

The problem: He doesn't have even half the motor that Jared Allen has.

An Indy car is designed to go faster than a Ford Mustang, but switch motors and see which one wins a race.

There's risk factors with Allen too, of course. A few years back it looked like he was set to drink himself right out of the league, but those incidents haven't recurred since he went to the Vikings.

It's an age old coaching dilemma. Do you want the more physically gifted guy or the guy with less talent but the willingness to work his tail off all day, every day?

As an example, say you wanted to draft a receiver and you have a choice between a tall, fast, physically gifted receiver who regularly dominates with ease and a moderately sized guy who's kind of slow but gives it all out effort on every play.

Knowing just those factors, the average person would most likely pick the first guy, and in so doing would take Roy Williams over Jerry Rice.

Julius Peppers and Jared Allen present a similar dilemma at the defensive end spot.

A lot of people thought the Vikes were skating on thin ice with that trade with that factored in. So what I think one must look at is the fact that the Vikes had a known problem drinker and gave up draft picks for him and gave him a nice sized long term contract hoping he would settle down as he promised...vs the Cats who had a known underachiever who didn't want to be on the team but had worlds of ability and would cost a lot of money for one year but no draft pick and might carry a huge risk for one year (cost not just money but team building).

You summed it up perfectly Mr. Scot, what we have here is motor vs overall talent and ability. If Peppers had the same motor as Allen we wouldn't even be having this discussion. So which is better...a high motor guy or the the talent. I would normally say the motor but I just can't stand Allen's antics so I'll take Peppers in this one but its close...as it should be.
