First off, it's not an article, it's a synopsis of answers to questions that people asked. Secondly, I do propose a question that somewhat diverges from her thought process. Third, her thoughts are pretty much in line with others' (meaning that it's not necessarily original). Fourth, I give her credit. And fifth, I'm fairly sure that the Charlotte Observer and Jeremy Igo would have something to say if I rewrote Rodrigue's article.

So, are you saying that Garrett can't run routes as well as Bersin? What about Ross or Clay?

What does @Jeremy Igo say?

I think that's a very easy conclusion to come to. I'm going by what the article says and what you said. Though your imagine Garrett is superior in every way angle is tough to contest!

You can put Bersin in any receiver spot and he knows the routes. He's like the utility fielder in baseball. He can fill in anywhere. The others may be good route runners, but compared to Bersin they still need a map to avoid getting lost.

I'm pulling for Clay to at least make the PS, since he's looked good and has experience returning punts with the Ravens.

I think Bersin has hands,Route Running and most importantly,  chemistry with Newton. Garrett not so much...

Again, I'm just discussing this guys. I obviously wasn't at TC, but I've seen what Bersin has done over the years, and how he's been treated by the organization. His on-again-off-again relationship with a regular roster spot has been somewhat frustrating in a sense. He was in a continual purgatory between the PS and the roster for seemingly forever until Byrd arrived in and took that spot for a couple of seasons. Even still, Bersin appeared never too far in front of Byrd, and neither of them had been good enough whereby the fan base hasn't imagined their ultimate replacements. Of course it looked like the Panthers weren't exactly comfortable at the thought of them having to fill in as anything more than spot duty either---indeed, there were (perhaps still are in some's minds) questions with the guys above them in the pecking order, and that's why the thought of guys like Stephen Hill, Keyarris Garrett, and maybe even Fred Ross garnered a level of excitement upon their arrival.

Now let's assume that Bersin is the better option for the moment because of his "chemistry" with Newton, his versatility at the position, or perhaps even his route running. As a regular part of the "development team" (if you will) he's had the opportunity to get those things down as the "default" filler option (if you get what I'm saying). He's had his time. Now, perhaps, it's someone else's time to take that role---someone whose only deficiency is that they haven't had the time to prove they can play that role even better than him. I mean, it looms like Byrd has already flown right pass Bersin with his first real opportunity, so it's not a stretch that given a real opportunity that perhaps Garrett, Ross or another would be able to do the same.

You know what I find kind of interesting? Take a look again at what Rodrigue said.

"As of right now, I’d think Bersin gets the sixth spot based solely on his tenure with the team and his ability as a route-runner."

She first said "solely on his tenure," then threw in route running. Admittedly, it could just be that she's just mindlessly using a rote term incorrectly and that I'm reading something into it that isn't there, but you can't offer a "sole" reason, and then come back with another. Either time is really the sole reason, or it's not. Perhaps time really is the reason, and that she throws in route running as a mental justification because she's not really clear herself as to why Bersin hasn't been replaced, but for time.

Anyway, I just find it interesting.

I am not a Bersin hater like many. I think that he's an adequate possession receiver, but I've never gotten the "route runner" argument pertaining to him. He isn't out of this world, at least from what I've seen. Moreover, he has good hands (maybe even "great"), but is this a real reason that trumps (pun not intended) everyone else. I mean, if you look at the list of some of the best receivers in the game today, even some of them let a few get away.

Not saying that this IS the case, but I just hate to see guys that have higher potential and upside seemingly always default back to the practice squad because of lack of opportunity, especially behind others who appear to have hit their ceiling.

It's refreshing to hear a Panthers beat writer report on TC without constantly bitching about having to be in the heat watching practice.

Exactly. Voth had an interview with Shepherd and seemingly couldn't wait to inject a heat and humidity question. Who gives a poo? You could tell Shepherd was bored with the question.

Thought the same thing when I watched that interview, haha

TC was pretty damn mild overall compared to years past and they are still milking that "Spartanburg heat" question

    • First of all Sooners fan? Mods? Second if you think someone needs a specific reason to hate Texas you don’t watch real college football.
    • 100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
    • It will be awesome to have an improved stadium to lose in I guess....   https://www.yahoo.com/news/panthers-file-rezoning-bank-america-111500840.html     The Carolina Panthers have taken another necessary step toward renovating their home of the present and future. Panthers Stadium, LLC, filed its rezoning site plan with the city of Charlotte on Monday, initiating an important — if mostly technical — step toward renovating Bank of America Stadium. The filings state that the rezoning relates “primarily to technical aspects associated with improvements to Bank of America Stadium,” and that the rezoning is required because “the current stadium zoning is out of date” for the team’s stadium renovation plans.   The planned stadium updates include new seats installed throughout the upper and lower bowls; stadium safety and security enhancements; a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion; upgraded restrooms; exterior enhancements (including LED video boards) and more. Planning for the stadium renovation project will continue through 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and the renovation’s conclusion in 2029, The Observer previously reported.
