Funchess Said He Doesn't Have Anything To Prove...

He doesn't get much separation. However he is a great option for crossing routes. He has been money on the Bang 8 route in the red zone. We too often have our guys run in straight lines 30 yards down the field. Funchess ain't going to win that.

His chest is so wide tho, if we ran him on more shallow crosses and posts then I think we would see something. Using his body to box out defenders and catching facing the qb is the right way to use him.

He's good on slant routes against mediocre corners, every time a a half decent corner checks him man to man he gets completely shut down. Especially if he plays on the outside.

Funchess is not an outside receiver

Most of y'all know that I support Funchess, but you should also know by now that I am still going to tell it like I see it regardless of who it is. I don't like what Funchess said, but he said it.

As expressed by Rivera and our former GM, this is his time. I get that he's a laid back kind of guy---giving off that down to earth kinda vibe---but, I'd just like to see a higher level of professionalism. Not saying that it's not there, but I'd just like to see it. But it is what it is. Funchess doesn't appear to be the best at interviewing, but what I believe that's going on here is that he just the type that puts his work hat on, goes out and does what he has to do, and rolls with the punches. I'd like to see him have a more aggressive mentality---a gimme the ball type of mentality---and a higher level of expectation, but that doesn't sound like who he is.

All that being said, I know that he is a lot more skilled, faster, and gets more separation than some on here are expressing. He knows it, and that's why he is so comfortable. It's his time to shine. If he is going out and trying to make plays when the ball comes his way (and that's the way that he wants to encapsulate his job in a nutshell), then he'll be fine because he has the talent to do so. The coaches seem primed to use him more efficiently and get him the ball. Cam seems to be very aware of his presence and engaged with Funchess---Cam knows the deal---so I expect that Funchess will surprise a lot of the naysayers. Funchess obviously won't be surprised at all, because he knows what he can do.

Just like with Byrd, whom I support but criticised for his comments last week, I believe that basically Funchess is saying (or not saying) that he's confident in an unorthodox kind of way.

I agree. I think we, too often, look for deeper meaning in what our professional athletes say. No self respecting professional football player is gonna sit up there and say something like, "I need to prove that I can gain separation" or "I need to prove that I can run good routes", or anything like that. He's a confident athlete, and in his mind he doesn't feel he needs to PROVE anything. In his mind, he knows he can separate. He knows he can run good routes. I mean, I know two plus two equals four; I'm not gonna waste my time proving it, right?

Part of the problem is the way the media phrases questions. If you really want to know what he has to prove, ask him what's he working on to get better. Ask him what his personal goals for the off-season are, as it relates to football. Then we may get some of the answers that would lead us to believe that he has the right desire.

High IQ right here

These comments mean nothing - as usual, anything other than I'M GIVING A THOUSAND AND TEN PERCENT COACH/I CAN'T WAIT TO DIE ON THE FIELD MASSA bullsh*t is an instant excuse for pasty armchair heroes to get all righteous.

That said, Lurch really needs to step it up this season. If Lard Lad keeps playing well - and I'm something of a believer in the ACL recovery excuse for last year - and we get the offensive overhaul we've been promised, targets are going to be hard to come by for a guy who can't separate.
