Funchess Said He Doesn't Have Anything To Prove...

you cant ignore the fact that he had a very simular number of targets compared to his first season yet had significant declines in catch percentage and yards gained. And also had serious problems seperating from defenders lest we forget that too. And even in the games he played in seemed like a ghost alot of the time.  Maybe Cam just didn't have time to throw to him or Cam kept locking on to KB and Olsen at the expense of Funchess when he actually did manage to get open.

IDK, its very up in the air right now what we have in Funchess. Maybe he really needs to be starting for his performance to be alot better. The only bad thing is starting Funchess and Benjamin you are starting two lumbering WRs that aren't that fast , who had some of the worst seperation rates from last season among most WRs who logged decent mininutes. So if our line is not blocking well again we're in the same situation of Cam waiting waiting waiting and getting sacked on 2nd down to make it 3rd and impossible.

He had separation plenty of times and he does not drop that many balls.

I hope your not talking about his career as a whole. b/c if you are, then go back and watch his rookie season . And even his 2nd season he had a much worse catch rate than his rookie season, from 49.2% to 39.7% which is god awful.

So? Jerry Rice dropped a lot of balls as a rookie too. It is possible for players to develop and get better over their first few years in the league. It has happened hundreds of times by hundreds of players over the years.

Many here overreact to a few words in a stressful environment for young players. I am sure he understands it's an important year for his pro career.

Perhaps he feels he can perform better if he doesn't put too much pressure on himself.

Let the year play out, then make your judgements based on what he does on the field, not in a press conference.

I agree. I think we, too often, look for deeper meaning in what our professional athletes say. No self respecting professional football player is gonna sit up there and say something like, "I need to prove that I can gain separation" or "I need to prove that I can run good routes", or anything like that. He's a confident athlete, and in his mind he doesn't feel he needs to PROVE anything. In his mind, he knows he can separate. He knows he can run good routes. I mean, I know two plus two equals four; I'm not gonna waste my time proving it, right?

Part of the problem is the way the media phrases questions. If you really want to know what he has to prove, ask him what's he working on to get better. Ask him what his personal goals for the off-season are, as it relates to football. Then we may get some of the answers that would lead us to believe that he has the right desire.

Just go and watch the actual interview and you will see that public speaking is not a big strength for Funchess. . He is not trying to be overly clever or to send subtle messages to anybody. He's just trying to get the interview out of the way so he can go  back to being a football player. Most of us would probably feel the exact same way too.

Yeah let's target a player who gets zero to no separation and has one of the highest drop% in the NFL. Theirs a reason Captain said those  words.

He doesn't get much separation. However he is a great option for crossing routes. He has been money on the Bang 8 route in the red zone. We too often have our guys run in straight lines 30 yards down the field. Funchess ain't going to win that.

His chest is so wide tho, if we ran him on more shallow crosses and posts then I think we would see something. Using his body to box out defenders and catching facing the qb is the right way to use him.

Meh...this makes sense. This is JR. This is Rivera. This is Hurney.

This is the Panthers organization. They hold on to players until it is smack you in the dick obvious they aren't working out (Jarrett). And nothing will change that. We like coaches who are stubborn, who like to get comfortable, who absolutely do not encourage competition or change. They do not take chances and they will not go for the kill.

Ealy was a good example of this organization going against the norm. And that was Gettleman. Admitting a mistake and moving on, but that is just not the Panther way. Never was.

Funchess doesn't seem to be anything special or working out, but rest assured the Panthers are more than willing to lose games, let him feel comfortable, give him zero competition and continue to let him keep a roster spot to know for sure.

I really feel very few Panthers on this team worry about having a job or competition...I think this...and dragging out processes is the main thing that separates us from perennial contenders and is evidenced by the roller coaster-like records throughout the history of this franchise. Gettleman was different from that and he got canned.
