Damiere Byrd back at it...

Wide receiver Damiere Byrdicon-article-link.gif picked up right where he left off. Two days after Byrd caught two touchdown passes in the preseason opener, quarterback Joe Webbicon-article-link.gif targeted the speedster in the back of the end zone during a red zone drill, and Byrd came down with an impressive contested catch against safety Kurt Colemanicon-article-link.gif.

Damiere has a ton of momentum going for him right now. Going to be very difficult for Duke or Ross to overtake him.

A very good point made here:

Like he did with his 8-yard touchdown grab versus Houston, Byrd again proved he can be a factor on short and intermediate routes – not just the deep shots he’s known for.

“If you can open up underneath quickly, you’re going to cause defenses to react a certain way,” head coach Ron Rivera said. “Guys like that, that’s what you try to find.”

Notice on his second touchdown he gets a ton of separation going horizontally:

That's what you want to see. Not just separation going vertical and down deep, but the ability to go horizontal and separate from corners.

That allows you to be a vital intermediate threat and shows quickness around the field. Now, I don't know how he'll do in the 0-5 yard area, but he does show good stuff.
