Why are there so many Clemson fans where did they come from

college football is way bigger than the NFL in SC considering the state has two nationally significant programs which have both been around for a thousand years.  it's hard for the panthers to make a dent.

Yep, my in-laws could give 2 shits about the Panthers/NFL, but if you say 'Clemson', they start foaming at the mouth.

A lot of butthurt in this thread.  It's a preseason game ffs.  Let's not forget, Carolina Panthers played their first season at Clemson and that is honored on the field with a Clemson logo.  And, as somebody said earlier, Watson is equivalent to Curry in terms of local fans.  Would you blast Hornets fans who show up in Curry gear?  While a lot of the fans last night may have been huge Panther fans, it doesn't hurt to cheer on a local hero in his only appearance in Carolina this season.

Tools. The majority of them probably also claim to be Panthers fans but yet they showed up to a Panthers home game decked out in gear supporting a rival player. Should've worn a Panthers jersey and rocked a Clemson hat or something. That would've been an acceptable compromise.

so... a few things to all of you bitching.

1. clemson is the closest (maybe wake forest is closer?) acc school to charlotte.  You have a lot of fans there.

2. for panthers, this is just a preseason game, but for watson this was an important personal milestone.

3. They only cheered for watson in the 3rd qt, its not like they were there cheering for the texans.

Meh, preseason game and first/last chance for a lot of those fans to see Watson/Boulware. I'm partial to Clemson but it bugged me when a huge cheer went up for the opposing team QB scoring a TD - glad boos eventually drowned it out. I was booing too, nothing against Watson but he's in the NFL now and I will NEVER root for a player on the opposing team.

Game vs the Bills a few years ago with Watkins and Spiller was the same deal.

I'm a Tennessee alum and love for our former players to do well in the NFL. However, if/when they play against the Panthers, I hope they have the worst statistical games of their careers.

Titans fans had the same frustration with seeing all of the Colt/Bronco jerseys when Peyton Manning was playing. He was literally the Titans biggest division rival and half the state pulled for the Colts at the time. Doesn't make any sense.

If a Hornets "fan" showed up to a Hornets vs Warriors game wearing a Stephen Curry jersey, yes, I would blast him.

Sorry if I came across as "butthurt" or whatever.  I'm not a Clemson fan.  I'm not a USC fan.  I'm not a UNC fan.  I'm not an FSU fan, etc.  The college I support plays (and dominates) in a lower conference.  I've just never seen a fanbase reaction like this.  Even if it was a preseason game, I think it's weird a factory for NFL players like Clemson has a fanbase so obsessed with one player.  I get rooting for him and wanting to him succeed, but the amount of orange in that stadium last night was staggering.  Even if it was preseason.  It wasn't a college game.  Someone brought up the NC State/RW thing and that is valid, but I've been to Panthers/Seahawks games and never saw considerable amounts of NC State red.

Also my friend put a snapchat story up last night of some fat chick (so definitely from SC) wearing a bright ass orange Deshaun Watson jersey telling a Panther fan "I'll cut your dick off and eat it".  No idea what happened before to provoke this, but Clemson fans must be fuging weird man lmao

Because they were mainly pulling for a guy on the opposing team.

When I'm rooting for the Panthers my college allegiances go out the door.

This right here. Huge UNC fan  but when we play a team with former Tar Heels on the roster, don't care who they are, I certainly won't be cheering for them and hope we knock their d***s in the dirt.

Watson will become a non issue next year and everyone will forget. This is his 15 minutes of fame.

Watson is one of those rare players.  He is like a Cam or a Wilson.  And given the Texans literally went the playoffs with NO QB......Watson and the Texans will be relevant because now they got a winner at the QB spot.
