Panthers.com Henson day 7 observations

Not really anything earth shattering, but here are a few excerpts and thoughts:

> Wednesday's practice was the fifth consecutive in pads for the Panthers, and at times, head coach Ron Rivera thought the physicality went a little too far. On one play, McCaffrey bounced a run outside and encountered a big-time collision with three defenders, who perhaps are growing tired of McCaffrey getting loose for big plays.

"I thought they got carried away a little bit today," Rivera said. "It was something I mentioned (after practice). We have to be smart about that type of contact."

We read this and that about CMC "breaking ankles," and it's kind of easy to put it off as just practice and guys not playing as hard as they can, but perhaps CMC is as advertised because he seems to be frustrating guys out there. I suspect that the guys that are hitting him aren't necessarily camp bodies or bubble players since he is playing with the ones.

> Officials made their debut at Panthers camp, and they tossed a few flags for pre-snap infractions. An official wearing No. 15 threw a flag after cornerback James Bradberrybroke up a pass intended for wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin and signaled offensive pass interference. "Great call 15!" safety Kurt Coleman said. "It feels good to be right," the official replied.

The offensive PI calls have unfortunately become an unwelcome regularity of KB's game. You would think that he'd be beyond that after three (really two) years in the league. Sure, some may call it a little thing, but it's unnecessary and possibly a drive killer. I say it in jest, but perhaps Smitty needs to show him how to push off without being so obvious. I could put it down to him being a marked man, so to speak---meaning that now the referees are just looking for him to do it, but camp refs are likely not from NFL officiating crews. KB needs to get that part of his game together.

> With safety Mike Adams getting a vet day off, safety Dean Marlowe got an opportunity to play alongside Kurt Coleman on the first team.

"He has to ascend. He has to continue to show that he can grow and better, which I think he has," Rivera said. "He's a very physical guy - he's one of the guys that has to learn to tempo his practice a little bit better. But I like the energy and the physicality he brings. He's got the tools and he's got the look of an NFL safety."

If you're like me, Marlowe is kind of an enigma. You've kind of heard that he can be good, but you've not really seen anything definitive. Well, I suppose that continues, but at least we know that it sounds like this is the time for him to put up or shut up. What is Rivera really saying? Is Marlowe a potential starter, or simply good depth? Some talent has to be there for him to still be here, so perhaps we'll get some answers as to how big a role he will play in the future during the preseason.

I've been waiting for Marlowe to do something since he got here. I remember reading about him at the time as a potential diamond and that Wilks wanted him.

I understand he's had injuries each year towards the end of camp that have kept him from getting a chance to impact the regular season. He's clearly got something going and I'd have to think he's been showing improvement each year. I think the biggest test may be making it to the regular season without injury. If he can do that and be on the roster then I think we'll see him fill in a some point this year and get his chance.

Definitely rooting for the guy, but it's getting to the point where you either do it or you don't.

I groaned aloud when I saw this on Twitter today.

KB's penalties killed a bunch of big plays & drives last year.   I hope Cotchery can really help him out.  He definitely has to be smarter in his play.

He was out with injuries all of last season and inactive / redshirted most of 2015, so he's not really had much opportunity to show anything.  So far IF he can stay healthy, I'm cautiously optimistic.  He's made some nice plays.  Let's see how he does in the pre-season games.

That was only last year.  In 2015 he was basically red-shirted (inactive for 15 of 19 games).  Played a bit late in the season but pretty much only on Special Teams

Some of you guys literally get drunk with lust over rookies during preseason. I enjoy being a panthers fan but the fan base sometimes gets on my nerves with these out of the world expectations of other human beings. CMC will be good he will not be super human. We still have issues on OL and also Cam is still recovering. Let's be reasonable here. Lol We will contend for the south and we will be in some close games this year. Because when poo hits the fan half of y'all leave and start looking for other teams. Lower expectations and remain loyal.;)

If Samuel and CMC can produce on the field (tough for Samuel right away but hopefully by mid-year) this team could start looking like the Steelers on offense. CMC=Bell, Samuel=Brown, KB/Funch=Bryant, Cam=Ben. Just nasty.

Samuel might not turn out to be equal to Brown, but he would fill the same positional role that Brown does.

Go look at 31 other NFL fan forums. Everyone geeks out over their rookies. They're the shiny new toys.

Have fun and live a little.

I don't really think anyone is drooling all over the rookies.  The only one that is getting a lot of attention is CMC. And unless you haven't been following practice at all.  CMC is making Pro Bowl caliber players look like practice squad players.  And truthfully, unless you aren't a Panther fan, how can you not be excited.

While I agree it is preseason and getting too hyped can lead to disappointment in the regular season.  This kid is for real and is going to help every offensive weapon we have.   It is another body teams are going to have to account for on each snap.

Final thought, I thought that when he came in that he was going to have issues with the talent level of the NFL.  His attention to detail, conditioning and just damn good athletic ability has shown me we made the right choice drafting him.

It's ok you can get excited.  Promise we won't throw Crow in your face if he ends up being ROY or something like that.
