Falcons LB De'Vondre Campbell Says Cam Newton 'Sulking Attitude' Is The Reason Panthers Were 6-10 Last Year

Another day. Another hot take without merit or basis.

This time, today's hot take comes from an overly sensitized "hype" article founding its claims on emotion. Falcons LB De'Vondre Campbell comes in to give his opinion on the state of the Falcons, and decides to give a lazy description of why the Panthers faltered last season:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2724963-atlanta-falcons-super-bowl-loss-interviews-season-preview-2017

Quote

Those Panthers "felt sorry for themselves" in 2016, he says, because Newton set a tone.

"I did not like that, man," Campbell says. "You're the quarterback of this franchise. You lost. Get up there. Be a man. And talk about it. You can't get it back. There's nothing you can do about it except go up there and be a man about it. … He's the captain of the team. They sulked so much that it definitely affected them last year if you ask me."

Another lazy response and take that has been exposed and countered time after time. Cam Newton's the last reason the Panthers didn't do too well, and it's a well known fact that we only lost 6 out of 10 games by 3 points or less with a large lead in the 4th quarter. Add the fact we had injuries everywhere + WRs performing horribly, and what else could you expect.

However, Campbell still has no right to call out Cam Newton over how he handled Superbowl 50 when you see what Matt Ryan did after Superbowl 51.

For all the flack Cam Newton gets about walking out of a presser and not handling the loss like your typical NFL robot, he never blamed anyone else for the loss. At all. Even when Shula kept repeating the same tired playcalls that are fooling no one, even when his wide receivers couldn't catch a cold, even when Remmers was placed on an island against the NFL's best pass rusher, Cam Newton doesn't blame anyone at all.

It’s not the dazzling playmaking or even the dancing at practice that endears him to teammates, but rather it’s his refusal to throw anyone under the bus. He won’t assign blame to anyone other than himself in a press conference no matter how obvious it is. And his coaches have to use unique interrogation techniques with him to understand what went wrong on a play even in the film room.

“I’ve had to drag it out of him in terms of, ‘What do you see? What can we fix?,” Rivera says. “It always starts with him. He doesn’t want to sit there and say, ‘I don’t like this play’ or ‘I don’t like that guy at that position.’ In his mind, he’s going to fix it and make it work.”

No matter what, Cam Newton takes all the blame on himself and doesn't bring anyone down.

For Matt Ryan, it's quite the opposite. When he commented on his Superbowl 51 loss, he didn't point to his own mistakes or take all the blame on himself. Rather than being the big man and owning their loss, he deflects and blames someone else for their loss:

Looking back, Ryan pointed to the cadence of Shanahan's calls as one of the big reasons for the Falcons' collapse.

"Kyle's play calls -- he would take time to get stuff in. As I was getting it, you're looking at the clock and you're talking 16 seconds before it cuts out. You don't have a lot of time to say, 'There's 16 seconds, no, no, no, we're not going to do that. Hey, guys, we're going to line up and run this.' You're talking about breaking the huddle at seven seconds if you do something along the lines.

"With the way Kyle's system was set up, he took more time to call plays and we shift and motion a lot more than we did with (former coordinator) Dirk (Koetter). You couldn't get out of stuff like that. We talk about being the most aggressive team in football. And I'm all for it. But there's also winning time. You're not being aggressive not running it there."

Matt Ryan chooses to not own up the loss and blame someone else instead. Ironically, he chooses the same OC that gave him the easiest QB system in the league.

In fact, Matt Ryan could've saved the game himself in plenty of ways. On the same drive he blames "Shanahan" for, he had a couple of opportunities to save the game himself.

In Matt Ryan's opinion, the playcall took too long. However, if he really objected to the play, Ryan should've called a time-out to talk it over and present his case. By not calling time-out and going through with the play, Matt Ryan essentially goes along with Shanahan and plays a role in it being a failure when he could've done something about it.

Just one example of many.

Cam Newton owns up his mistakes and seeks to learn from it, and his 2016 performance is no exception. With brand new weapons and a new identity, the Panthers look ready to bounce back under the leadership of a true QB, while the Falcons look to make excuses for a blown 28-3 lead with a QB who doesn't even know how to blame himself.

So always remember: The Falcons Blew A 25 Point Lead In The Superbowl

The play you are pointing out could have easily been a pick 6 with the undercutting LBer. Not to mention pressure in his face 2.5 seconds in against a 4 man front with 6 blockers is a sure Oline failure.....but I digress.

Btw...you took his comment out of context. He was asked if you could have changed the play in that instance, Ryan gave the reason why he couldn't. Even Shanahan admitted he didn't always do a good job of getting the play call in.

Another homer post from Saca. No where does Ryan blame Shanahan...he got roasted on the Falcons board for saying it but clearly reading comprehension is not his strong suit.

I believe my reading comprehension is just fine:

"I think sometimes the headlines of articles can be misleading," Ryan said Sunday from training camp, via ESPN.com. "In that situation, it was just a reference to how we operated all year. It wasn't coming in too late or anything. That's just the way it came in. I thought Kyle did a great job for us last year.

"I think everybody is reading a little bit too much into it, and it is what it is. But we've moved on. We're on to this year. And we're focused on trying to become the best football team that this team can be."

Ryan continued, defending Shanahan, considered one of the league's best playcallers.

"We didn't have any delay of games," the quarterback said. "This wasn't a critical take on Kyle at all. This was just the way that we operated in the past. Kyle did a great job for us for two years and did a great job of calling plays for us. It wasn't a critique on him. That's just the way we operated."

Sure.

From Matt Ryan's own mouth before he was caught cold-blooded:

Quote

"With the way Kyle's system was set up, he took more time to call plays and we shift and motion a lot more than we did with (former coordinator) Dirk (Koetter). You couldn't get out of stuff like that."

Sounds like he's contradicting a lot of what he said.

    • I'd be willing to wager most if not all of us have, at some point, found ourselves in a situation where we just stopped giving a sh-t. This is especially true when you realize the people leading your particular group or organization are incompetent.
