this is a thread where i compile news articles to normalize the idea that other teams besides the panthers also have conflicts between players and front office executives

deadspin with a great article that shows a different aspect of the nature of contract negotiations

http://deadspin.com/we-need-a-better-way-to-talk-about-nfl-contracts-1781540074

When it comes to big contracts, if you’ve only agreed to length and overall value, you haven’t agreed to anything at all. More and more people are starting to grasp this, but still nearly not everyone: Everything in an NFL contract that’s not fully guaranteed money is, functionally, imaginary.

Length only counts for the sake of spreading out a salary cap hit; no one in the modern NFL plays out a six-year deal under its original terms. Overall money only counts as good PR for teams and agents; it’ll never all be paid out. What Miller and the Broncos are still haggling over—the amount of guaranteed money, whether it’s fully guaranteed or for injury only, and the amount and reachability of various performance bonuses—is all that matters.

The Denver Post’s Mark Kiszla writes about how this is another example of John Elway’s Broncos being cheap, though Kiszla is quick to mention (and he’s right) that in a salary cap league, trimming costs where possible and pressuring players to offer hometown discounts can be a very good thing.

some more insight into what is happening in baltimore re: colin kaepernick

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/6530/colin-kaepernick

According to ESPN's Dianna Russini, both coach John Harbaugh and GM Ozzie Newsome "support" the Ravens signing free agent Colin Kaepernick, but "have met resistance" from owner Steve Bisciotti.

That's exactly how it has felt in recent days. Harbaugh has continued to express a desire to get Kap in the Ravens' building, but Baltimore fans have flooded team headquarters with messages against the quarterback after he knelt for the National Anthem last season. Bisciotti recently said he is "praying about" the decision. It shouldn't take this long to figure it out. Russini reports the Ravens are now looking at Aaron Murray as they cycle fringe quarterbacks through the roster. Kaepernick would be a heck of a fit football-wise in Baltimore.

idk if anybody posted this article here, but it really drives a stake in the heart of the idea that this thread's goal is to refute

https://www.derp/2017/7/24/16018320/nfl-carolina-panthers-marty-hurney-dave-gettleman-why-the-next-gm-is-being-set-up-to-fail

Jon Beason. Jordan Gross. Steve Smith. DeAngelo Williams. Josh Norman.

All gone.

And based on their tweets and comments since their departures, most of them seem pretty bitter about how their time with the Panthers ended.

But here is what else has happened since Gettleman took over: The Panthers went 40-23-1. They won three straight NFC South titles. They reached the Super Bowl.

And in 2015, Dave Gettleman was awarded the NFL’s Executive of the Year.

...

Remember, the GM isn’t negotiating with players. He’s negotiating with their agents.

For example, Greg Olsen’s agent is DREW FREAKING ROSENHAUS!

Here is how Rosenhaus described himself in a 1996 interview: “I am a relentless, ruthless warrior. I am a hit man. I will move in for the kill and use everything within my power to succeed for my clients.” He wrote a book in 1998 titled A Shark Never Sleeps

Even “good guys” like Greg Olsen seek out the fiercest, most shrewd, most effective agents. Players and their agents want to get as much money as possible. There’s nothing wrong with that, but the process can get ugly when Drew Rosenhaus and “sharks” like him start negotiating.

Good GMs need to be just as ruthless as players and their agents can be. Otherwise, teams will get shredded in negotiations and end up $16 million over the salary cap.

I thought CSReader was kind of a running joke around here for years? I guess if the agenda fits, you'll take what you can get, eh?

Maybe if you post a few hundred more of these useless articles, JR will wake up from his daily nap, and bring back the anointed "best GM in muh lifetime" Dave Gettleman.

Or maybe he'll just hop in his golf cart, and ride around training camp shaking hands with those selfish snowflakes known as our players.
