a story about the contract negotiations between alejandro villanueva and the steelers

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/20173657/pittsburgh-steelers-sign-lt-alejandro-villanueva-4-year-extension

LATROBE, Pa. -- There will be no holdout for left tackle Alejandro Villanueva, who has signed a four-year extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced Thursday.

The Steelers didn't disclose financial terms. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who first reported the agreement, confirmed an NFL Network report that the deal is worth $24 million.

Villanueva, 28, wasn't under contract because he hadn't signed his exclusive rights tender of $615,000.

prior to this he was threatening a holdout

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2017/07/18/Alejandro-Villanueva-holdout-Steelers-LeVeon-Bell-contract-exclusive-rights-free-agent/stories/201707180099

Left tackle Alejandro Villanueva, an exclusive rights free agent, would not commit to reporting on time for training camp when he was interviewed by reporters in June. Like Bell, Villanueva has yet to sign his tender. He participated in organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp after signing a waiver that protected him against injury.

The fact that Villanueva participated in voluntary practices this spring could mean he’s not going to push the envelope, but he also said he’s going to do whatever his agent, Jason Bernstein, tells him to do.

Apparently, Richardson either doesn't know or care that Gettleman was being prudent with the future of the franchise. He just couldn't stomach having some of the franchise's all-time greats having a bad taste in their mouth regarding the organization.

That's a heck of a message for the next GM the Panthers end up hiring after Hurney: If you value your job, make sure the long-time Panthers are happy, even if you don't think it's in the best interest of building the football team.

This ^^^.

Until this franchise changes ownership... no Panthers GM will ever again attempt to do what is needed to ensure the long term success of the team... knowing full well that would be the quickest way to the unemployment line.

this article highlights the importance of negotiating on the players' side as well. hey denver, in bird culture this is considered a dick move.

http://www.businessinsider.com/russell-okung-broncos-contract-backfired-2017-2

Last offseason, NFL offensive tackle Russell Okung decided to enter free agency without an agent to avoid paying a fee on his contract.

Okung signed a five-year deal worth about $10.6 million per year with the Denver Broncos. It was noted immediately, however, that the deal represented the kind of gamble many expected Okung to be taking by negotiating without an agent.

In 2016, Okung's base salary was worth over $5 million, and he could earn up to $8 million with incentives. After that, the Broncos had the decision to pick up the remaining four years of his contract which had about $20.5 million guaranteed.

In essence, Okung was playing on a one-year deal with very little money guaranteed thereafter.

Well you've definitely missed some terrible posts then. Even Panthers vets that have been gone many years were getting roasted.

As far as the organizational discussion, it all begins and ends with our owner. Which is why the player bashing is so f*cking stupid. You've got owners now routinely holding cities ransom so they can get billion dollar stadiums built, and line their pockets, but it's those greedy players that are the problem? Um, no. Look around a bit.

From frash or from others? Because you're acting like the entire side of pro DG are bashing players when that's not even remotely true.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jerry lives another 10 years.

You boys better buckle in.

I'm telling you what I've seen man. Do you think I'm lying? There's a reason frash isn't even attempting to deny it. I didn't say every DG supporter was. But I would say when things got really rough, close to half the board was bashing TD and Olsen those first few days. Some are even still taking cheap shots at them.

I like frash, I like you, I like most of the long time posters here. But I'm not going to kiss somebody's ass if they're bashing franchise players based on speculation. We have had many long time posters here doing just that. I've heard it's been the same in all-pro too, which is quite embarrassing.

For years fans here have talked about how we never get respect from other fan bases, or from the media, or from whoever, every year there are threads with titles along the lines of "look at the disrespect we're getting!". This is still the same fan base that routinely has it's stadium taken over by opposing fans. Yet we have established fans proliferating pure buffoonery, and we aren't going to start heading in the right direction by ignoring this bullshit or patting ourselves on the backs for being fickle maniacs.

If some people think football teams are "disrespectful" towards players in negotations, I bet they'd fall to their fainting couches if they ever read or heard about what baseball teams do when teams and players go to "arbitration".

Here's a real nice one about Mike Minter.

On 7/18/2017 at 0:55 PM, frash.exe said:

lol remember the endless "THEY NEED A STATUE WHEN THEY RETIRE" threads? or that one pc during the summer of 07 when minter was bawling at the podium? yea thanks for stepping down voluntary after basically rotting on the field the season before bc the team would've basically let you stay there forever.

And more about players as the Gettleman firing unfolded.

i don't want to hear any of you saying poo about how the new gm can't put together a winning team when he's trotting out old players bc he's too preoccupied with appeasing everybody

i hope they want to go 7-9 every year, bc that's what they're going to get

well maybe they can all hold hands in a circle around the shield at the 50 yard line and sing kumbaya at the end of week 17 as they fall short of the playoffs by only 5 games, and they can pretend like they've accomplished that feat in their heads. maybe take some mdma while they're at it to enhance the euphoria.
