Same Old Song: Cam Being Misconstrued

So, Cam makes a statement. A metaphor of sorts. And somehow that comment gets spun and presented in way that implies he refuses to run less, is at odds with his coaches, and refuses the pledged help to protect hisself.

Maybe Cam doesn’t phrase things perfectly, or extrapolate the meaning of the things he says as well as he could, but it’s clear, if you listen to his entire press conference, the idea that he’s attempting to present. Consult logic. Cam is a talented runner. Running is one of his gifts. There’s not a single athlete that’s better off by choosing to not use his gifts. Refusing to shoots threes would not make Steph Curry a better point guard. Refusing to use his strength in favor of finesse would not make Rob Gronkowski a better tight end. Refusing to run, would not make Cam Newton a better quarterback. So like he said, “Would you expect a lion to not roar?”

Cam Newton had a total of ninety carries in 2016. That’s six per game. Take away scrambles (which aren’t designed) and it’s even less, take away kneel downs at the end of the half or game, less still. Turns out Cam may not have run at the torrid rate last season that many like to believe.

But that’s not the point, right? The point is… has Rivera ever said that Cam would be running less? I know he’s said that he wants the offense to evolve. I know he’s said they want to be more judicious when he runs. It’s likely that he’s said something about knowing that Cam needs to take less hits, but has he actually said that Cam will run less…? Because the offense will evolve by getting the ball out of Cam’s hands quicker, using more screens, dumping passes off to the running backs more. The Panthers could be more judicious about Cam’s runs by having him depend on less read-options and merging towards other schemes. And Cam would take less hits if he wasn’t being blasted by a pass rusher as he uncorks a pass twenty yards downfield after navigating a failing pocket for five seconds.

It’s possible for Cam to take less hits without him running less. And even if the plan is for the Panthers to run Cam Newton less, what kind of strategy or gamesmanship would it be to admit that? Bill Belichick certainly wouldn’t admit that kind of information, and neither would he allows his players to admit it either. But somehow Cam’s statement has been printed and announced as such that he must be not smart, or lazy, or stubborn, or he knows he’s not a good passer so he has to ride the “running quarterback” thing until the wheels fall off.

This is really just a rant. Just looking for some Huddlers to back me up. Our quarterback can’t say a single thing without it, seemingly, purposely being misconstrued. And then we bash him for walking out of interviews.

He's a poor speaker and as such he leaves himself open for the trolls and haters. Luckily I don't care about what they say, Cam's play, toughness and adoration by teammates tells me plenty.

That's was my original thought too, but then I think... Cam's either finished or is about to compete in a practice. He may or may not have eaten yet. He probably has other things on his mind, like the playbook. And he doesn't go into these conferences with some kind of script. So like most people, when they don't have time to think through their answer (because they're on the spot), they mess up a phrase here or there. Their grammar maybe be a bit off. They may not go into deep explanation... so some of the responsibility has to be on the media to present things in the right context. It wasn't five minutes earlier that Cam made it clear that he would do whatever the coaches told him to do. And a few hours later there's an article on ESPN with a title that reads Newton will take pass on plan to run him less.

Really, David Newton?! Lol.

Also, completion percentage is not the same as accuracy, Cowherd. You know who else only completed 56% of his passes? John Elway. And I've never heard someone say he wasn't an accurate quarterback. When your game plan consists of using the running game to set up the deep ball, you're not generally gonna complete 65% of your passes.

Less designed runs like QB Power and more of PA, bootlegs, rollout , etc and 2011 scramble if the pocket breaks down.

Cam has to become not only a better passer but improve his pre-snap reads & shifts/motions

    • So this has been one of my biggest concerns with Canales and it's the downside of having some young offensive guy who doesn't have full staff control. like what is the org chart for this decision?  With canales, who does he know or has worked with that he can tap? He hasn't been in Seattle in 2 seasons and all those guys are gone anyway. He wasn't even that high up on the org chart in Seattle so it's unclear who he would have regularly interacted with. QB coaches generally aren't going to be in the split squad meetings, at least not regularly. Just glancing at the coaching staff, Clint Hurt jumps out. He was DC in 2022 and is currently the dline coach in Philadelphia, but that team is the brainchild of roseman and i'd be very hesitant to bring in someone who was allowed to walk from seattle and would be having a SUBSTANTIAL decline in talent here in Carolina. With Tampa, that defense is a shambles and fans want Bowles out. It's a very top heavy coaching staff too; Bowles is very involved so there isn't some bright up and comer, from what Bucs fans elsewhere have said. Someone from the Bills maybe? Morgan was last there in 2020. Who could he call? No one established is going to take that position for a few reasons. There very little talent on that side of the ball, so you're not getting the rockstar mercenaries to come here. They're probably going to struggle to bring in some hot up and comer, since anyone with ambition is going to see how Tepper handled evero's request to interview for other positions and not want to deal with that. That's a problem the team has created on its own and I don't know how to fix it until they have someone leave for a promotion, which is going to be difficult with how dogshit this franchise is. And then, any agent is going to tell their client that the Panthers let the whole defense eat poo heading into 2023 just to "give bryce weapons." they let two starters walk and traded away a third. who would want to come in to this? how are you going to build/retain talent? There's only a few logical possibilities from my perspective 1. Someone out of nowhere who just crushes their interview 2. Someone from a good defense promoted WAY earlier than they should be and you just hope for the best 3. Extend Evero. I know a lot of people hate this but I think it's going to be the best option. This is the problem with Canales as coach. I don't want to go into what I think about the offense in this post, today or as it projects, but it's just not going to be easy for him to assemble a staff, if he even has the power to do so. For all we know Morgan is handling all defensive positions and hires. unclear org charts are a hallmark sign of a poorly run organization. I dunno. i think it's lowkey the biggest problem on the team, even moreso than the QB position.

    • Yup. Why pass when you can get 5.1 ypc, worst in the league and with the most attempts against, and are typically playing with a lead.
