unverified report: gettleman cut steve smith because in 2013 he punched cam newton in the face twice in the locker room after practice

Cam has like 8 inches of height on Steve. You're making it sound like Steve is a midget and unable to reach his face. Smh

5'9," 185 lbs., even with a lengthy reach (which Smitty appears to have), vs 6'5," 260 lbs....  Cam would have to be completely unaware or kneeling down for Smitty to get a clean, meaningful shot on him.

And again, it defies the behavior patterns in the previous attacks.  Cam is bigger, has never backed down from anyone that I've seen, and had a direct impact on Smitty's production.  The other guys weren't big guys, werent known to be tough, and we're unsuspecting of it coming.

Again, I'm not denying it, it just seems hard to picture it realistically...  Unless as Philly speculated, it was more like a scuffle with a crowd around them...  I could see Smitty throwing a hopeless punch just to prove a point, but doubt it had any real impact.  And not defending Smitty if he did it, but as it is often said, in-house fights aren't rare.  They happen all the time.  The issue wouldn't be whether Smitty fought Cam, it would be more whether he cheapshotted him (like Bright/Lucas), and was basically leading some kind of one-man mutiny.  I could see the reasoning behind parting with him in that case, but with most teams, even internal beefs blow over with time...

I got two sources that have connections with the organization that say he did punch Cam. PhillyB's not spouting random crap.

I don't think Philly is spouting random crap. I think he was told that. I also think that it didn't happen. If so it was likely a scuffle, that was less serious than what happened with Cam and Josh Norman in camp.

Yeah Lafell had 2 touchdowns that game so I believe it.
Both Philly and YGFH would never just make random sh*t up either

i would be supremely disappointed if he made it up - there's really no telephone excuse if it's straight from gettleman's mouth.
if exaggeration is the key here it's very possible a heated altercation in an altercation would end up with cam and smith surrounded by a crowd of guys poo-talking, which would make a punch a lot less effective than a haymaker in open space. could've been a scuffle punch.
also hard to imagine cam four years ago NOT talking copious amounts of poo at a guy like steve and steve not being perfectly willing to bust him in the mouth.

I don't mind naming my source either...Ricky Prohel....he worked with my brother and I volunteered at Prohelific park. Ricky is such a genuie dude and good guy. He would talk to me for 30-45min at a time about the Panthers and football in general. One night I got up the courage and just straight asked him what he thought of the smitty situation. Shaking his head"Had to he done. Just had to be done. There's so much you guys don't get to see." And then he proceeded to tell me about the Giants game incident. Ill never forget it. So I totally buy this story.

The punching him in the face thing is exaggerated. The 2 above articles reference the rift's and why Smith was let go. He did not punch Cam.

Plus there is this. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/12/28/ron-rivera-thinks-steve-smith-should-retire-a-panther/

Rivera wasn’t alone hailing Smith Wednesday, either.

“A fierce competitor,” Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said. “There’s not a lot of guys that you look down a dark alley and you say, ‘I want to bring this person, I want to bring that person.’ Steve Smith is one of those guys that you better make sure that he’s on your team and not against the team because I’ve seen both of them. I would prefer him being on my team.”

the claim in the OP is that this narrative is missing the narrative in the OP, so posting this narrative alone doesn't do a lot

So you're referencing mainstream media to disprove an underground story that was kept from everyone?

Well I could pretend to have source's too! So maybe some minor altercation happened but again it's unlikely he just sucker punched him.  Voth is a plugged as it get's, so we know his info is good. He never said anything about Steve Smith coming out and cold clocking him or sucker punching him.

Why would he if he never knew to begin with? And even if he knew, why would he risk getting closed off from the team after breaking the story?

I call total bullshit! No way this doesn't get out, and no way the FO sits on it until the end of the season.

if he broke cam's nose yes. if cam tried to drown him in the ice tub yes. if it was cam and smith jawing in a sea of guys trying to pull them back and smitty through a few punches while their arms were locked?

absolutely believable and absolutely cover uppable.

also, IF true it casts jerry richardson's judgement in a spectacularly worse light given the allowances he made for smith. the davidson story is well documented and provides a reasonable case for richardson refusing to allow him to be cut in spite of this, IF it happened. smitty is a commodity and that's what jerry cares about, commodities. if bersin punched cam he'd be hanged at dawn
