Steve Smith was a YUUUGGGE fish in a very small pond in Carolina for his whole career and then the beautiful trophy marlin that is Cam Newton came along and naturally there was some animosity.

Sounds too easy to make up.  Smitty already has a history of punching people, so it makes it easy to connect the dots.  Maybe he and Cam got into an argument and while it telephone gamed down to the smoking buddy it got embellished a bit.  That'd be the easiest thing for me to believe.  If it came out from an actual source (Cam, Steve, Rivera, Gettleman) I'd be disappointed and much more accepting of the decision to cut Steve all those years ago.  But this is one of those stories that is going to be impossible for me to accept unless there's some real evidence.
