unverified report: gettleman cut steve smith because in 2013 he punched cam newton in the face twice in the locker room after practice

a healthy dose of skepticism is warranted for anything of this nature. it's a pretty big claim with no hard evidence to back it up.
however it fits his pattern of behavior and these stories have been independently corroborated by multiple sources, some of them directly tied to the team, like ricky proehl.
just as important is jerry's penchant for slamming the lid on these sorts of issues. if players recognized the problems it could cause, why is it so improbable they never told anyone? or that former coaches wouldn't go out telling the story unsolicited but if questioned might bring it up?
you don't have to accept it as fact but there's a hell of a lot of smoke here and too many people yelling fire.

Yeah I can get behind some parts on the story being true, maybe a argument did occur that got a little to heated, in just skeptical on him punching cam twice and our guys just brushing it under the rug the rest of the season and so on, there's smoke but there's also a lot of other reasons this cannot be true, you generally hear these type stories when teams are trash and losing not particularly from a team winning and on the streak we were on. The behavior pattern I understand but I like to believe people can eventually change, and I think smith did truly change a bit after the Lucas situation.

A move like that happening and a coach or gm just playing it off to the end of the seasons can no shape or form sit well with teammates let alone the face of the franchise qb

I don't believe such a incident can be kept a secret for such a time, and cap savings is the biggest reason discussed on here why smith was released followed by performance, which both are highly debatable, I understand smiths past but he did a good job after the Lucas incident to keep a cool head going forward.

Also I'm not buying the demand the ball stuff, either he wanted to play the slot role and not be the number 1 guy or he was still trying to be the number 1 guy....can't be both, and I'm going with playing the slot since he verbal stated it

PhillyB isn't usually incorrect....that's all I have to say.

As I said earlier, this is the way circumstantial evidence begins to pile in; often times, hearsay is the beginning and is dismissed as such. As time moves along, corroborating stories, often from people not directly tied to the incident but people that may have witnessed it or people around the area (team), begin to come to light.

Game of telephone. Original story was probably they got in a spat and Smitty got in Cam's face. Then it became they had to be separated by teammates. Then there was a shoving match. 10 people down the line and Smitty has now punched Cam in the face twice.

this would be the assumption if it weren't for the fact that my source quoted it directly from gettleman's mouth. seems to me either the entire thing is completely untrue or it's got legs.

I think that just about confirms it lol. Straight from DG.

Did Saca confirm it with his source?

yes, but therein lies the rub: confirmations are all secondary people. it seems like a huge coincidence that people would corroborate a story as specific as that but until somebody here hears it directly from somebody within the organization it can't be confirmed.

YGFH is the only guy who's heard something truly direct, and that was proehl, but proehl wasn't asked directly about this.
