unverified report: gettleman cut steve smith because in 2013 he punched cam newton in the face twice in the locker room after practice

It actually does make sense. No plausible explanation has been given for cutting Smith like we did and nothing really explained the reason Smith was acting the way he did once released. The fact of the matter is that in most situations like that, a player would likely remain close with guys on the team; it seems that in Smith's "Blood and Guts" comments, a hidden feature of alienation was present. Smith also has a history of punching people while Cam has a history of stepping up to people whenever he feels like it.
Also, it isn't that it's coming out four years later, it's that PhillyB is just now being told the story to share.

I don't believe such a incident can be kept a secret for such a time, and cap savings is the biggest reason discussed on here why smith was released followed by performance, which both are highly debatable, I understand smiths past but he did a good job after the Lucas incident to keep a cool head going forward.

Also I'm not buying the demand the ball stuff, either he wanted to play the slot role and not be the number 1 guy or he was still trying to be the number 1 guy....can't be both, and I'm going with playing the slot since he verbal stated it

a healthy dose of skepticism is warranted for anything of this nature. it's a pretty big claim with no hard evidence to back it up.

however it fits his pattern of behavior and these stories have been independently corroborated by multiple sources, some of them directly tied to the team, like ricky proehl.

just as important is jerry's penchant for slamming the lid on these sorts of issues. if players recognized the problems it could cause, why is it so improbable they never told anyone? or that former coaches wouldn't go out telling the story unsolicited but if questioned might bring it up?

you don't have to accept it as fact but there's a hell of a lot of smoke here and too many people yelling fire.

be honest; you would probably make an excuse even if there were pics of smitty punching cam. That's your agenda. As I said earlier itt, its a culmination of things with him, from other sources who are mega smitty fans themselves, to things that were reported to stuff we saw with our own eyes, it was time to move on from him for Cam's sake.

photoshopped!

But yeah... I'll always give Smitty a pass. Bottom line, I guess.

That still doesn't change the fact that a lot of people in our fan base, especially on the Huddle, are quick to pull out the pitchforks in certain situations.

From my perspective, we (the Panthers and their fans) basically...

...ran Pep out of town

...gave Smitty enough rope to hang himself

...labeled TD old and declining

...marked Greg as greedy

...blamed both the latter for Gettleman's walking papers

If you want to talk secret stuff about Smitty... I remember getting second hand information from a "source" once that Smitty made the comment that "Jerry Rice couldn't catch a pass from Jake Delhomme on Jerry's best day..." and this was from the waning days of Jake's career, when he and Smitty were still supposedly close.

Obviously, that isn't as triggering as him punching Cam Newton in the face twice. I mean, if I were Smitty and I was gonna punch a QB in the face twice it would have easily been Jake some days. But, still...

Yes, I am an admitted Smitty homer and always will be, as stated in so many words above.

Was it right if it happened like is being portrayed? No. Do I still blame him for things he did four years ago? No. It is kinda pointless and irrelevant, other than to add more fodder to feed people's irrational hate of someone they likely have never even encountered in person.

again... I'd never doubt you...

I think the part I quoted said it best, from my perspective.

I guess when I weigh what Steve Smith gave the Panthers, and what we gave him in return, I just feel like the scales lean more towards Smitty's side.

i'd take some time and read the thread. i'm much less skeptical of my own OP having done so myself.

could of happened...who knows.  Fights definitely happen we don't hear about.  89 as we know has a near uncontrollable rage that comes out.

If true, 89 obviously did phase the big dude too bad.   Not a mark on him that year.

89 NEEDED to go.  It still could of been handled better.

i wonder how much it would take to get him to hit shula

Only made it to p21 so far but I had to quote this...

This is probably the main reason I want Smitty back is so he can wreck Shula... lmgdao

I feel like Smith was more controlled in his later years and many here are assuming.

He was often mindfuging DBs in game getting them to throw punches at him all the while he stayed cool enough to draw a penalty. I feel like if he wasn't throwing punches in games, I doubt he was doing it in the locker room.

Not reading 28 pages...

Smells like BS to me. Even coming from PhillyB, whom I respect probably more than almost anyone here...

Regardless of it being true or not, the same people that hated Smitty before are still gonna hate him. He doesn't care about those people, other than for motivational purposes.

I don't really see the point of exposing it now, though, again, if true. It seems kind of agenda serving, at the very least.

A lot of you are quick to tear down these guys that go out there and do their best for us. I've seen it with Pep, then with Smitty, and more recently you have clowns even hating on Davis and Olsen and they are still on the team.

Y'all hoes ain't loyal.

Im never a fan of someone that attacks other players on my team and causes distractions and throws temper tantrums in the locker room. Even if you choose not to believe this, Steve had already attacked 3 other teammates that we know of. Steve Smith is a douche bag.
