unverified report: gettleman cut steve smith because in 2013 he punched cam newton in the face twice in the locker room after practice

again, if true, it casts his feud with gettleman in far worse light than it had up to this point and reveals a sickening level of poor judgement that reaches farther than anyone ever imagined. if true he should not be in control

Even if not true, it's still 3 that we know of plus locker room tantrums.

Why do people find this so hard to believe? It's not a big deal IMO. I got in a fight with a CB in college in our dorm. Teammates don't mean you have to kiss each other's ass 24/7. poo happens. You deal with it and move on.

I don't think the disbelief is in the idea that he challenged/scraped with anyone or that fights happen within the locker room...  I think it's more shock that it was THAT bad with Cam, and that people have to reason out that this was just the final straw among many.  We know Smitty was fiery, a bit of a diva, and abrasive...  And we know it was rumored there was a power struggle with a changing of the guard once Cam and Luke came into the fray.  But, it's hard to process that even a tempest like Smitty would cut off his own nose to spite his face by going to those lengths with a guy like Cam.  Again, not to the point that they fought...  that's expected...  but that it got so bad that it couldn't be resolved eventually.  Makes me think Smitty just wanted out.

Personally, as I alluded to in other posts throughout the thread, I'm also surprised more that DG rode out the "declining veteran not worth the money any longer" reasoning for the release, rather than the organization trying to neatly package it for the public.  A lot of executive, in-house dynamics and optics to ponder...

if he broke cam's nose yes. if cam tried to drown him in the ice tub yes. if it was cam and smith jawing in a sea of guys trying to pull them back and smitty through a few punches while their arms were locked?

absolutely believable and absolutely cover uppable.

Knowing human nature, not everyone was or is a fan of Cam or Smitty. Not even those in the locker room.  If it got to your drinking buddy, it would have made it to someone else, with loose lips, before now. Moreover, I would take a guess that something like that is mandated to be reported by the NFL and/or the NFLPA. Being the company man that JR is, I don't see him not following through if the story is as bad as that.

I'm leaving the tinfoil hat on the shelf in the closet for this one.

I don't have any sources, just part of a family was involved in football for most of their lives. When we shoot the poop, awhile back I heard Smitty got in Cams face a few times. Besides finger pointing, I don't know the details- ie yelling, spitting distance, words used, reasons, etc. Each time he was told cut that out, that is OFF limits, he didn't stop until Dave cut him. That could also be a reason why Dave didn't even bother asking steve about taking a pay cut, which was my question to start with. Steve just did what he wanted and didn't listen to RR, Ricky, or Dave. (or respect their pleas)

I believe every word of these stories. Anyone that followed his time with this team and paid attention should have known that SS has a huge ego.  That's what drives him and makes him as good as he is on the field.  It also feeds his alpha male complex that was enabled by JR because he was selling jerseys I guess.  I was shocked that JR actually allowed Dave to do it but in no way thought is was a bad decision by DG.

I think this sort of solution would require everyone involved being on board with telling the same story to the media.

I doubt that was possible in this case.

I also doubt anyone in management would be foolish enough to risk ruining their professional credibility/integrity soft peddling a story in order to cover up for Smitty's (alleged) bad behavior.

I honestly don't find it shocking at all.

Guys who are used to being the Big Man on Campus don't generally react well when another BMOC comes along and takes their spot.

Smith had been the center of the Panthers universe for a looooong time. Given that fact and what we know about Smith's general demeanor, it was probably only a matter of time before something like this happened.
