unverified report: gettleman cut steve smith because in 2013 he punched cam newton in the face twice in the locker room after practice

This would explain a lot, honestly.

Smith would have been used to being the "favorite child" (i.e. spoiled brat) and used to getting whatever he wants over everybody else.

Enter Cam Newton, and suddenly Smith isn't the primary apple of the team's eye anymore.

That's a formula for a major meltdown.

Smitty was the emotional and physical leader of the Panthers for a decade prior to Cam showing up.

Believing Steve would simply hand off that position to Cam without a struggle was likely unrealistic.

But the team's greatest player ever swinging at/hitting our national media darling and presumptive leader of the Panthers?

Yeah, I could see the team management putting a lid on that chatter immediately.

Imagine the media circus that would have surrounded the Panthers for the rest of the season if word had gotten out?

Also losing more respect for JR by the day.

again, if true, it casts his feud with gettleman in far worse light than it had up to this point and reveals a sickening level of poor judgement that reaches farther than anyone ever imagined. if true he should not be in control

Ok, after seeing more and more corroboration, i have to believe at the very least, a scuffle happened.  And it sounds like yes, it was Smitty or Cam...

But I go back to my issue with how it was handled...  being that the public didn't know about all this at the time, and it appears the organization was trying to keep up good optics, why didn't Dave give him an honorable way out?  And again, I understand Smitty isn't the type to accept someone else's terms, but if he had no choice, why wouldn't they try?  That was my biggest issue with the release.  Even if Smitty didn't want to accept it, neither Dave nor Ron seemed to honor him in anyway.  And how it played to the media was that Dave basically told Smitty he was on the decline and wasn't worth what he was being paid anymore...  And Dave and Ron never really wavered from that narrative.  That's the confusing part about it all when considering all of this new info.

remember richie incognito?

smitty probably would've said it was not a big deal. that's what bullies do.
