Simple Question.. Who had the harder job?

WOW!!

Hurney vs Gettelmen

Who had the hardest job coming in?

Gman - Bad cap situation, had to make some hard decisions on fan favorites, and build depth ..

Hurney - A dismal roster with little to no foundation pieces, had to hire a coach and his staff, coming off a 1-15 season, pretty much a irrelvant franchise..

Hurney had a seriously high draft pick and enough money to go shopping in Free Agency (anyone remember Rodney Peete?).  He also had a crop of promising rookies, although that wasn't really realized until 2003.

Gettleman had some difficult contracts to navigate but which were all going to be gone in three years regardless of how he managed them.  He had a franchise quarterback, a world-class MLB, several pro-bowl caliber players, including a LT and a potential HOF WR, and did I mention he had a franchise quarterback?

I think that mainly because of the contracts (that were going to be done in a few years anyway), Gettleman's job was much harder because he had to rely on the talent that was already on the roster instead of shopping free agency for it.

To really focus on this question we need the Cap situation in 2002.. Because Siefert did some damage to the Cap with bad signings as well. I just don't know how bad the damage was..

It's not their cap figure, but the 2002 Panthers had about $50,605,766 worth of contracts (source: http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/carolina-panthers-team-roster?season=2002).  In that year, the Salary cap was 71.1 million.  But that doesn't really matter to me because Hurney was managing the cap for Seifert.

Seifert was making all the decision as HC and GM right?? How bad was the Jeff Lewis hit?

The question could be broke down simple as this..

Would you rather be The Browns or the Colts?

2002 Panthers = the Browns ... Some young ? on the roster but no solid foundation pieces searching for QB.. Cap flexibility

2013 Panthers = The Colts... Not much cap flexibility but alot of proven pieces on the roster..

He was making the decisions, but Hurney was managing the cap for him.

There is a very real argument to be made that DG's job was harder, and that's because outside of the 1995 season, we had not experienced any success as a franchise and expectations were very low.  Under his predecessor, the Panthers had been to a Super Bowl and a couple of NFC Championship games.  Sure, they only had three winning seasons, but when Hurney took over the Panthers had experienced only one as a franchise.  So expectations were very different, and that's one respect where Gettleman's job was more difficult.

I can agree with this becuase like I said the Franchise was irrelavant..when Marty took over...

But in Hurney Pro's the Hardest thing in football is finding a QB and Dave didn't have to..

Rucker, Smith, Jenkins, Morgan, Moose, Hoover, and Minter were the main players Hurney adopted. In 11 years he added Pep, Jake, Kalil, Beason, Olsen, TD, Gamble, Buckner, Cam, Luke, Stew, D-Will, Spoon, Gross, Norman, Wharton, and Captain. if I am missing anyone worth a damn, feel free to add in(Davis, Foster, Keyshon etc didnt spend significant time here). Cap space as we all know was in a terrible place, handicapped us for 3 seasons. 17 players in 11 years is not very impressive.

Of those guys, DG only adopted Smith, Beason, Stew, Williams, TD, Olsen, Cam, Luke, Norman and Gross. DG added Star, KK, KB, Shaq, McCaffery, Samuels, M Kalik, Addison, Turner, Norwell, Coleman, and Bradberry all as a future foundation if we can retain Star and Norwell. Cap space is more than reasonable when considered the signing of a franchise QB, LBr, DT, and RG. He also added some good contributing FA's in Peppers, Adams and Munnerlyn. 11 players in 4 years is better than 17 in 11.

DG's job was way tougher, considering he only had a handful of key pieces, three which he had to let go and Gross retired. We can speculate as to why and if it was a year earlier than he expected. The hardest thing Hurney has to do is not F IT UP.

Hurney, DG had a lot of good players already specially Cam made his job easier.

Either some of these guys are new fans or they just don't remember how much of a trainwreck this team was when Marty took over.
Gman came in to a 7-9 the year before with alot of proven franchise pieces..
Hurney came into a 1-15 team that was literally destroyed by a apathetic HC/GM who was stealing a check and sleeping during practice and games...
