Fascinating data (at least to me) re: our offense vs. man coverage [and how much our defense played zone last year]

It's really more that we had a lack of a guy who can get quick separation going horizontal.

CMC and Samuel fix that. I'm actually thinking up of a write-up utilizing that idea.

Next year, defenses will pay big time if they try blitzing us this year.

It's gonna be so hard to call a blitz when McCaffrey is on the field.  Truly a great piece for where the game has been headed for a few seasons now.  I honestly don't know how teams will plan to defend the combination of Cam out of the pocket with the combination of Olsen and McCaffrey lined up with him.  I just can't think of what you do with high football iq players along side of Cam when he starts to improvise.

It also shows that Cam is getting better at reading zones and has the arm to exploit holes in zones no matter where they are.

He doesn't, however, have that sniper-like accuracy to put the ball in his receiver's hands through tight coverage. Those guys are pretty rare. Cam has touch, but not to that degree. He's definitely power over finesse.

New faster guys in the offensive rotation should help with exploiting more of those zones and should create some openings in the man to man coverage schemes. Also, if Olsen can keep doing what he's been doing, it's going to look a lot better this coming year.

And on defense, you know we're going to be headed to more man coverage as our youngsters keep getting better and better.

@Khyber53 I disgree with you where you say Cam can't throw in tight coverage. In fact, that's what most of his throws were - insane throws that would've been picked off if thrown by any other QB, but Cam puts it in just the right spot.

The other issue was that our WRs are slow and poor route runner aka less separation means tighter window for QB to throw

Hence the reason Atlanta and Tampa are still our biggest threat in the NFC South. Don't get me wrong every single game matters, but if we can win the division, we are right where we want to be in January. The shift in the NFC South is that everyone is trying to add as much speed as possible on defense, especially at Linebacker. Every team has a explosive offense with ours potentially getting better with this evolution. This will be the most competitive division in football outside of the AFC West.

He wins in tight coverage by power over finesse, but it's still not the strongest part of his game. I'm not trying to slight him here, as many of the greatest QBs to play the game have the same profile. Either way, I think we'll see him picking apart busted coverages all season long as our new weapons come into play.

So one way this can be looked at is that when other teams manned up against our crappy WRs, Cam wasn't as successful. (Which, as been pointed out by analysts, Carolina WR were the one of the worst at getting separation in the NFL.)

But when they zoned, Cam was able to find the hole in the zone with success?

so Kaepernick would still struggle....

Still disagree. He's a pocket passer, and he's really good at throwing in tight coverage.

In the play depicted above, the Panthers gets absolutely no separation and is in really tight coverage in man. Cam Newton slam dunks the football right in the right spot. Not many QBs can do what Cam does.

In the play depicted above, watch as Cam throws the ball right where it needs to be with Marcus Peters all over Kelvin Benjamin. It's a perfect ball right where only KB can reach and catch it. Very few QBs can avoid turning this into a pick by Peters, but Cam Newton turns it into a heck of a play.

These are just a few examples of many of Cam Newton doing extremely well in tight man coverage. I think Cam's one of the better pocket passers in the league, and people undervalue him for it.

Excellent examples. You're changing my mind on this. Thanks.

I made my opinion very known about the amount of zone we play

But honestly, I don't know what to make of defenses playing us 50-50 on man vs zone. I can say I'm pretty sure its mostly trying to confuse us and switch things up. Probably while we struggled so much.
