Death of a Gettleman: JR is at best Carolina's Tragic Hero

Yeah, no point in looking at Hurney's entire body of work, that might make him look like a bad GM or something.
Hey, I've got an idea let's give that guy that accomplished less in his 12 years here than Dave did in his 4 another shot?
Capital idea JR!

But it's fair to bring up Hurney 12 years of service to Gman's is fair.. Because it works well in Gman's favour..

And again Hurney did more in 2 years than Gman did.. Both statements are dumb..

Well you've got me there.

Hurney should have been fired after his second year as GM, then his record would have looked a whole lot better.

Too bad for all us Panthers fans who enjoy winning games that never happened.

Also we know why Hurney got fired we don't know why Dave got fired.. But it was serious enough for Jerry who never fires ppl this quick fired him..
But back to the point ..
You are posting fake news.. You are basis and using alot of hindsight 20/20 in one area when it can't be used in the other..

Oh a finally .. Dave wasn't fired for Hurney in the 1st place.. You ppl want to make this a Hurney vs Gman thing when one really wasn't fired to get the other..lol

Congrats, apparently winning is not your priority... just like the owner.

Looks like those people who enjoyed the last four years (the best 4 year run in Panthers history) will just have to grin and bear it for the foreseeable future.

Full retard with a cyrstal ball..

Facts stupid..

Gman 2 winning seasons 2 losing season..
So how do you know what was going to happen if he stayed??

Seems like Facts aren't a priority to you.
Sounds like another group of idiots in this country..

This is one of the greatest pieces of literature I've ever read. It also makes me sick to my stomach that Hurney is back. In a couple of years well see the ramifications of Gettlemans firing. Or maybe not. All depends on this season. Also if Hurney stays. I certainly hope they find someone else. I wish they'd hire accorsi again.

Hurney being the guy to do the GM search is definitely far from ideal.

I was hoping Richardson would consult somebody like Joe Gibbs. Accorsi wasn't a likely option given that he championed Gettleman (wonder how this stunt will affect that relationship).

But if he actually does do a legit search, i expect it to concentrate on guys with a history here. Hence, they'll know how to work with - and hopefully around - Jerry Richardson.

The good part: There are some guys who fit that profile that actually look to have some ability. Cowden and Kirchner, for example, could be solid candidates.

Here's hoping...

I think JR's feelings were conflicted when it came to Dave Gettleman.

Dave's ways were so foreign to JR that Gettleman might as well have been from another planet.  However, DG was getting good results and straightening out the mess that Hurney had left behind, so JR tried to suppressed his instincts to can him.

Fast forward a few years... the team is now set up for success and the finances are under control.  JR decides to say fug it and returns to his comfort zone.  He fires Dave and hires Marty... again.

By the next time the Panthers go to hell in a handbasket, chances are good JR will have already secured a Lombardi Trophy so what does he care?  He will be happier knowing there is a group of loyal, overpaid, football players singing his praises.

Note:  If this scenario actually comes to pass, I'd like to think JR would be man enough to do the right thing and give Dave a SB ring and some credit for his efforts.

100%

Totally agree.  And yes if (WHEN!) we win the SB, DG better get a ring!

We were 6-10 last season thanks to a god awful defense caused by the GM, I'm not sure why most people here believe we're Super Bowl contenders.

1. Peppers & Munnerlyn strengthen our defense, fill holes and bring ATTITUDE & HUNGER.

2. Bradberry & Worley no longer rookies.

3. Mike Adams > Tre Boston.  Coleman gets to move back to his better position.

4. Cam seeming focused & motivated.

5. CMC & Samuel.

6. New WR coaches, hopefully  light a fire under KB & Funch and help them overcome weaknesses.

7. New offensive guys may force Shula to modify his game plan, make us less predictable.

8. Competition at Kicker.

A lot of reasons to be excited...  Obviously MUCH depends on how O line gels and health of guys like Luke, and both Kalils.  But right now they all seem healthy.

First, I don't think DG was perfect.   I didn't like his take on the tackle situation, dealing with Norman, and the way we let some guys go like Smith (not the letting go part).    I questioned some draft choices but mostly liked the picks.      I'm far from a massive DG fan, but I think firing him at THIS point in the offseason is silly and I really think he deserved another year to see if Matt Kalil pans out and the rookie CB's he took.    If you're going to fire a GM, you do it after the season and before the draft and all that, not 8 days before training camp.   I hate the timing, and because of the timing, I can't see this as anything but an emotional move on JR's part without much thought.    Further emphasizing that belief, we go out and hire Hurney, self-proclaimed Mr. Emotional, to head this team in the "interim".    Most of us know, he'll probably end up being the perm though.

We also now have a situation where everyone is kind of OK with mediocrity.   This team has been defined by that.  Now we have JR, who seems to be ok with it or at least chooses emotion over success, we have Hurney, who also we know, is ok with it, and we have Rivera, who is the definition of mediocrity, though not terrible.   Overnight, we're back to basically a Fox regime.    We also STILL have Shula as our OC, somehow.

I just don't think we'll become a consistent, winning team, till JR isn't making decisions anymore.   I get he brought a team here, but it would have happened anyway, just maybe have taken a bit longer.    I don't feel we owe someone that has became rich from the team, honestly.    We know what kind of owner he is, and he isn't changing.     I think we can be great this year, maybe next year, but if keep Hurney as our GM and JR keeps meddling, success, I fear, will be short-lived.
