Trai is making top 5 guard money.. He's a top 5 guard.. I'm not sure what should have been expected.. This is a very reasonable deal .

He's now making more money than Luke. Think on that.

The second highest paid player on this team.

Your math is correct, but cap hits don't work that way. 11 mil is average cap hit for the deal, most deals are going to  have a smaller cap hit first 2-3 years.

For example, Keuchley's last deal was for an average 12 mil cap hit , but cap hit for the first two years is 6 mil a year.

Over The Cap is a solid website for finding out contract numbers-Sportrac actually copies OTC numbers. He did an article on the basics of the salary cap here. Spend some time on that site and you'll have a much better idea of the cap.

That's where I pulled my theory from. His base contract is 11 mil without incentives. So that's give or take his cap hit.

Im not by any means saying I'm right. But as I understand that's roughly where the panthers are at... the key being his BASE contract is 11 million. Luke's is 7. Luke is a top 5 player in this league, any posistion. This is why I hate firing DG and hiring Hurney.

Edit: and I'm not hating on Trai by any means, he's my favorite style of player. Works hard, stays quiet. Just that if this is any indication of things to come we as an orginazation are screwed.

NM, someone else already covered what I was going to say.

I will say that Luke's guaranteed money is significantly higher that Trai's, 27 vs 20 million.  Also, Luke's cap hit is 12 million for the upcoming season.

According to Sportstrac, Luke's cap hit is almost $13m.  For some reason they don't have Trai on the average cap hit rankings, but that might be because they are calculating the new contract and its effect on the cap? In any event, Trai's contract is market value. Even if his contract is worth more than Luke's in some measurement you use, that's what the market says he's worth.  As someone else said, he's a top 5 Guard and we paid him top 5 Guard money.  Hurney didn't say Trai was worth that contract, the market set that price. Your beef is with the teams willing to pay top Guards that money, not Hurney.

Also, by yearly average, Luke is being paid more than Trai. Screenshot_20170721-155349.thumb.png.de1353803d768b9a6fde4afe3cae1c29.pngScreenshot_20170721-154031.thumb.png.af4a6e1d3a8b3da07ddf102d4136cd51.png

All in all though, I find these rankings fascinating.  I'm going to be on Sportstrac for the rest of the day....

Come on man. Read my posts before shooting from the hip. I never said anything about total pay. Especially in a signing bonus year. I'm talking base contract and salary cap hits. Perpetuating the trend I see now as we almost already killed our cap with this sign. Something we all knew Gettleman wouldn't do. His job plan and simple was to manage money. And he did a damn fine job of that.

Wasn't talking about guaranteed money. Want talking about bonuses. I'm talking about thing that actually effect the cap. With everything else Trai is going to hit above Luke this year.

How Panthers fans were going to react to this signing, in short form:

If the contract numbers they viewed to be acceptable: LOL you think Hurney did this? This deal was negotiated before he even crawled out of the womb.

If the contract numbers were unacceptable: LOL here we go again. Thanks Hurney. can't wait to be paying an interior lineman LT money with Matt Kalil protecting the blindside!

I don't believe that anyone would have reacted that way on this forum. On the comments section to an NFL.com or Bleach Report article, yes. I've already seen comments on the panthers facebook page congratulating Hurnia on getting this deal done so quickly....

"Hey Moron! DUUHHHHRRRRR"

The base contract price doesn't mean anything.  It's just a number. The meaningful number is the salary cap hit which includes everything else. We don't know yet what Trai's total salary cap is.  Maybe it will be bigger than Luke's.  But that still doesn't matter. It's Trai's value as a top 5 Guard. What Luke is making is not even relevant.  Trai was paid what good guards are commanding. You look at his value compared to other guards.  Not what linebackers are making.

You need to judge a players pay vs his peer group, not another position player (who signed an extension 2 years ago)

Luke is the highest paid MLB in the game, deservedly.. Trai is top 5 Guard in the game, he should be paid as such... Not sure exactly what you want.. (I'm completely ignoring the fact that Luke DOES make more than Turner for the purposes of this conversation)
