We can not afford to lose Star Lotulelei

I think they let Star play out the season and see how he performs in a contract year, could be wrong.

but I agree Star is vital to swallowing double teams and allowing Luke to work. Our defense goes to poo when he's hurt

Seriously? Since when  is having a talented and deep D-line rotation a bad thing? Is this bizarro world?

It's a bad thing when you don't have a SS, WR's, at LT another TE. Since when is having DT depth more important than having actual starters at more important positions?

Not saying he won't be a solid player but selecting Butler in round 1 when we already have KK is foolish.

Just like selecting Kuechly in the first round when we already had Beason... The Defensive Line plays on a rotation, so guys stay fresh and the potential talent level won't drastically drop off with Butler as depth. Not to mention if an injury occurs. Butler had an injury riddled rookie season, you can't chalk him up as a wasted pick just yet.

We just signed Turner to an extension and I'm stoked about that.  The next guy to extend absolutely has to be Star Lotulelei.  Vernon Butler is NOT a NT, he is much more like KK than he is Star.  Star is one of the best NT's we have ever had.  We are best with a good DL and Star should be a vital piece to that DL for years to come.  That is all.

I think JR has made the command decision that, three years from now, his team will be better off with a 35 year old Greg Olsen at TE than a 30 year old Star Lotulelei at DT.

Gooby is another one of those Madden GM geniuses who thinks that you build teams from the outside-in instead of the inside-out.

100% agree Let's get rid of Gano , Dickson and Oher. That shoud free up decent amount of money

We can maybe restructure Cam and Luke deal to free up additional cap space if needed

All the talk about nose tackle has me a little confused.  I know we go with a 3-4 on occasion, but our base defense is still a 4-3, or has that changed and I missed it?  Or are you guys just referring to Star lining up against the center?

Nose tackle is sort of a ubiquitous term for a 0-tech/1-tech DT that primarily lines up either over the center or in an A-gap. Functionally the 3-4 NT is a 2-gap player that controls both A-gaps and ideally requires double-teams to block, while the 4-3 NT/1-tech also eats space and tries to occupy double-teams but is focused on owning/controlling a single A-gap and does not have the same 2-gap responsibility.

Additionally, on any given play a shade/stunt/angle/twist/etc could be called that dictates a different responsibility.

Beason was coming off a major injury and he had prior experience at olb. Beason, Davis, and Kuechly were both starters to begin the 2012 season (Kuechly at olb), but injury to Beason moved Kuechly to mlb.

Kuechly was always guaranteed to be a starter somewhere at LB. Butler won't start unless there's an injury or Star isn't re-signed.

Why add depth to DT in round 1 when we had glaring holes to fill? We could have selected a DT later in the draft.

Yeah, I sure am gonna wait and see Cam Newton at age 28 and Luke Kuechly at age 26 restructure to take less money or even restructure to push portions of their salaries into the future where those dollars will be worth less.

I'm suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure gonna wait and see on that.

For those saying we can't afford to lose Star, obviously, there are limitations on what we can/should pay him.  Is he so important that we need to pay him like the other top NTs in the league?  I'm interested to get some opinions on where Star ranks among the leagues top NTs..  Is he close to top 5?  I understand that its hard to judge a NT on stats, and i like Star, but I dont think he's irreplaceable.  I dont think he's close to someone like Damon Harrison for example.
