Ron says Marty made some "blunt" comments about the roster

I have not listened to his interviews...he rarely gives good info.....but, I read that he said that we are already over the cap next year, when we absolutely are not....another flag for me.

By the time we re-sign Norwell, Star, and give TD and Olsen extensions, we might be.  He's privy to all the discussions going on by now, and could have let that slip.  I wouldn't worry much, we knew this was coming and now it's up to someone to figure out how to make the numbers work.

Another reason not to extend Olsen or TD this year.

I think you can extend TD and at the same time lower his current cap figure.  Cutting Stewart will create room.  There's rollover money to consider.

In other words, even though we've committed a lot there are ways to work around that.

When Marty starts working on figuring out how to "afford" guys, I get real nervous about the future.  His back loaded deals killed us for years.

Haven't read everyone else's thoughts yet... but...

Dickson and the other TEs not named Greg Olsen probably better make some noise in the preseason. Otherwise we just drafted a guy that could be their replacement, and we could be about to pay our WR1 like a TE2.

The days of Joe Webb as QB3 might be numbered. I don't know that Hurney really favors carrying a third veteran signal caller.

We have 13 WRs on paper. At one point, the only locks I would have assumed were Benji, Funch, and Samuel. I thought Shepard and Johnson make it too, given they were recent signings, but I don't know if it is as sure of a thing now. Bersin probably has JR behind him. Shepard was likely eyed for the slot and his return skills, but those are covered by Samuel and McCaffrey, so he might have become expendable in Marty's eyes. It doesn't make much sense money wise, though (not that that has ever stopped him.)

Part of me wonders about Pep's positioning. I doubt he was the focus of these comments, but I wonder if they'll stand him up more than originally thought.

I'm still kind of hoping Armah, if he doesn't stick at FB or TE, might still be looked at at OLB. I think he has a good skill set there, at least in some situations.

Oher is probably gone. We've got too much money into the OL at this point, especially with the news of Trai extending. After the investment in Matt Kalil, the writing is on the wall. Also, Gradkowski is probably gone. Larsen did an excellent job, and I don't think we need to carry too many backup C/hybrid G's.

So in their first conversation, Hurney gave Rivera cause to reflect more on his roster and look at it from another angle. How is this in any way a bad thing?

I'm betting that a couple of the players were on the offensive line, he may have talked about Butler doing more at DE, and potential for a CB to try out the SS position.  But I doubt he was talking about starters.

"Hey Ron, are you ready?

Picture this...

Here it comes...

Ready?

Vernon Butler, offensive tackle.

WHADDA YA THINK?!!?!?!?!"

Don't joke.  After Gettleman got here they were going to move Sua to Guard.

    • Meh I get the intent but signing the OGs at the highest price and coming out with a historically bad D isn't something other teams should do. The Bears took a better route. Older guys but cheaper. Only negative I got there is that they still need to take an OG this year but that 4th is 2026 so it really should be hard for them to make a solid swing before it's a gapping hole again.
    • The coach of the Chicago Bears just referenced the turnaround of the Panthers once they invested in guards.  He then has just signed 2 high profile guards.  How is that not copying the Panthers?  I agree that there is not a lot to copy here, but step back.  We lost Darnold before investing in the OL.  We lost Baker before investing in the OL.  We drafted Bryce before successfully investing in the OL.  We invest in 2 guards.  After a slow start, Bryce ends the season 4-5 and is very close to both Philly and New England.  Later, the new coach of the Bears references the Panthers and how they turned it around after signing high profile guards.  A week or two later, they announce they signed 2 high profile guards.  I think all GMs paid attention to what has happened here.  It may not be the sole basis for their decision, but the defense cost us 2024, not the offense.  In addition, we did it without our #1 WR, a top TE, and the cupboards were pretty bare at WR.  I think they noticed.  As you say, Frank, we shall see.
    • I was about to say he put up a damn near 40 inch vertical and a 10'3 broad jump, even if he only runs in the 4.6 range the guy belongs in the NFL, not sure he will ever be an elite back but he definitely can contribute
