See this is what I don't like about everything that's happened. Now we're saying TD gets to decide how long he plays and starts here.

If I was Shaq and they told me to move to SS I'd say release me so I can play on a team that actually wants me to play. He's already said he doesn't wanna be a SS.

I know I can't even imagine how much all of this pisses Shaq off. Have to imagine he knows he's ready and wants to be out there full time so badly.

But it appears Shaq is going to end up playing out his entire rookie deal as a rotational player.

Shaq Thompson has an elite skill set, sure.

He is not an "elite LB" at this point, though.

From the snaps I saw, I'd call him an elite LB. His coverage was considerably better than when TD was playing, and he really looked the part.

What you call "thinking outside the box", I call not having an eye for talent.

And how does that make sense? It's likely Gettleman's acquisitions that he's referring to. After an abysmal '16 season, where much of the team appeared to be lost or just going through the motions and not maximizing their talent; and, a season where Funchess was not used enough or improperly according to Rivera and Gettleman, why not try and shake some things up---create some mismatches and attempt to maximize talent? How does this demonstrate a lack of eye for talent?

Come on, man.

Position changes in the NFL are rare, and specifically if he's referencing Funch, it would be a huge setback for him.  He is young, didn't play a ton of college football, and has never been a focal point for Cam.  If he can't cut it at his normal position, he likely can't come close at another.  Not to mention, TE is a very hard position to learn.

If he's talking about Shaq, it makes even less sense.  Shaq has proven that he can play in this league, and play quite well....you leave him alone.

What some of his statements really tell me.....I haven't done this in a while, and I haven't really paid that much attention to the Panthers roster or salary cap.

When he came out of college a couple of scouting reports had him pegged as a SS.  He certainly has the athleticism to play the position. If he doesn't want to play in the safety spot then I wouldn't try to force a square peg into a round hole, especially since he's proven he has the talent to be a standout LB.

There is already talk that Shaq would get more reps to cut down on Davis's wear and tear as he ages. Even if the contract of the latter is extended I would follow that plan in order to get Shaq on the field more. I think his rookie deal is for 4 years with a 5th year option since he is a 1st round draft choice. He's just entering his 3rd year. We have him for at least 2 more years (probably 3 if the option is exercised).

I'm curious to see how many years Davis wants on his extension. I could see keeping him for the 2017 & 2018 seasons, but I'd be leery of going on beyond if it meant alienating Shaq to keep a 36 year old LB in 2019.

That is correct. We will need to pick up his 5th year option this offseason (which is a no-brainer).

And you're totally discounting that Funchess played TE in college, and he's still younger than most in the NFL, so he has lots of time to learn if someone cares to put the time in. Hell, before he was drafted, there were plenty of questions as to whether TE would be his most appropriate position as a pro. And they weren't coming from Huddlers.

I'm not discounting anything....it just doesn't make sense to do it.

A GM....the first day on the job.....questioning if we should start switching some of the players positions just scares me.
