JR is. Hurney's just the guy to put the final touches on it and sign off on the deal. Honestly, given what has transpired in the last two days, I have to wonder if all the ire directed at Hurney in the past for the big deals to aging vets was deserved or not. I'm thinking there's a very good chance that those were never his decisions to begin with. He could either ink those deals or get fired. Hurney was willing to be the yes man, Gettleman wasn't.

Got a feeling there is a lot of truth to that. It's always been said that the moves made around the 2010 lockout and big contracts after were at the direct orders of JR. People can say what they will, but how many in Hurney's shoes would not have followed the wishes of the owner of the company you work for?

hurney made enough blunders elsewhere to justified getting shitcanned imo

He also drafted the most dynamic player in league history and a league MVP in Cam, and the best linebacker in the game in Luke.

If that was another GM at the helm, I doubt we walk away with both, or either.  I honestly don't care about the extensions he gave out, bc I'm sure it was an order, not a request.  But, even removing those blemishes from his record, it doesn't make him a great GM...  maybe not even a good one.  But, as I've said elsewhere already, at this point, it should be clear JR is running the show and always has, so a lot of the praise of Gettleman and the hate for Hurney is misguided and misplaced.

If somehow it wasn't obvious prior to this week's events, it should be obvious by now that Jerry Richardson's incessant meddling is the common denominator to 20 plus years of mediocre results for the Carolina Panthers.

Once again, Jerry has managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Yep. Yesterday, I was certainly willing to entertain the idea that maybe Gettleman really was such an abrasive asshole that it had reached a point that JR felt like he had to do something about it. But today, with bringing back Hurney and rumors flying of a new contract imminent for TD... you'd have to have your head deep in the sand not to be able to see what's going on here.

The thing that trips me out about that too is a lot of the people pinning the blame on Hurney for those contracts were likely cheering them on as they went down.  Nobody wanted to lose CJ,  especially not to Atlanta.  We were still in the "Double Trouble" era, and I genuinely don't remember a ton of complaints when they re-signed either.  Most of the fanbase seemed happy...  especially after JR went all pie-chart leading up to the lockout and made us sit through Clausen and Co. right before it while he refused to spend money.  Once the lockout was over, it seemed like a gift to the fans for him to open his wallet up again and re-sign all of our guys...  and from what I recall most everyone ate it up at the time.

Only after it started hamstringing moves years later did people complain and pin it all on Hurney to make themselves feel better.

Oh boy! You have no idea. This has given me a fire in my belly to be back on here like never before. I was broken by Bane and tossed in that deep and dark abyss, this Dark Knight has risen after the events that has transpired baby. I am back and I am itching to see that "Post topic" button to be avaliable yet again my friend.

Don't push it too hard, Igo.  You need to try to slow-walk this "comeback" a little more for it to be more believable.

Hurney signed the core players of a 2-14 team to cap busting long term contracts, no doubt at JR's direction.

And that is in a nutshell the difference between Hurney and Gettleman.

One is a spineless yes man willing to destroy a team's future to retain his position within the organization.

The other, Gettleman, understood playing hardball during contract negotiations was part of the job description.  He wasn't about to undermine all the hard work he had done getting his organization back on its feet to placate an owner more interested in being adored than winning championships.

Gettleman was fired for doing the job he was hired to do.

Hurney was rehired not so much because he was a good GM, because he wasn't, but because he is someone who happens to excel at olympic level ass kissing.

There were a few of us.  You can dig up the Stew and DWill extension threads if you want to point and laugh at some posters.

What's funny, almost all cheered on these terrible contracts and lauded Hurney...hell even called him a cap genius....then as soon as we couldn't surround Cam with talent, they forgot all about those awful extensions.

I had no problem with the CJ deal. Still don't. Paying Jake a king's ransom when he was pretty clearly shot, not choosing between DeAngelo and Stew and instead paying them both elite starting RB money, plenty of criticisms to make of Hurney, but I honestly don't think the CJ deal was all that awful.

Well, there's the thing.

Evolution of the species depends on surviving and LEARNING from your past mistakes.

Not doubling down on them.

it was clear from the moment they happened that it would hamstring the team in later years.
