Ian Rapoport: "The #Panthers are finalizing a deal to hire former GM Marty Hurney as their new interim GM, source said. Will take them through 2017."

This reads as if "after we interview a few GM candidates to adhere to Rooney Rule, Hurney can have the job if he wants it"

Please tell me I'm reading this wrong.

You're reading it wrong. Hurney will hire the next GM and will take some other role with the team, if he wants it.

As team president, I wouldn't mind.

Just get him away from negotiating contracts.

I asked this in another thread as a generalization, but I'm gonna ask you because I respect your knowledge base and the wide breadth of your research when looking into a topic.

Has an NFL team (or any other of the four major sports for that matter) brought back a guy to be GM after firing him as GM, let alone bringing him back following the firing of the guy that initially replaced him anyway?

I'm packing my truck to go camping and won't have cell service til Saturday night, so I look forward to see what you come up with. Make it a new thread and @ me so I can find it if it's buried by the time I get back.

I want to know exactly what kind of uncharted dysfunctional waters we are sailing into.

Thanks Scot!

The Eagles kind of did this? They gave Chip Kelly gming authority for one season, demoting Howie Roseman to a different role. Well after they fired Chip Kelly they gave gming back to Roseman. It's not quite as insane, as he never left the organiation and was only stripped of power for one year, but it's close.

The scariest part isn't the amount of money that JR and Hurney are going to give away....it's the type structure that will be the worst.

Hurney was always in cap hell, so he backloaded every deal....keeping himself in cap hell.  He wasn't a cap genius, he was a fool that liked to kick the can.

Lordy, what a mess.

One of two things will happen.

#1 Hurney gives TD and Olsen outrageous contracts and then dips out.

#2 We're given the bullshit that he's "interim" and then he's just kept on.

It makes sense in the fact that we need someone in the position, but his job should basically be non-existent heading into the season. Which is what scares me about TD and Olsen. If Beane was still here, he would have taken over. But all of that got taken away from us. My question is will this affect the team on the field at all? If someone had a contract year coming up, would it affect them? The result possibility is that it will either change nothing or be worse. Nothing good will come of this.

Yes, this will strongly affect the team going forward.  A precedent has been set.
