Why is the Timing Bad and Why do We Need an Interim GM

Can't we interview and hire anyone, we want, as long as it would be a promotion? That would basically just eliminate current GMs and hopefully we aren't waiting for one who is going to fired after the season. The roster for this season is mostly set. So, maybe Rivera has more say over the 52nd and 53rd guys and the practice squad. Wouldn't it be better to hire someone now, as opposed to after the season and give them more time to evaluate potential draft picks and free agents?

I'm no expert myself but I would tend to think it would be easier for a new gm to come in now when there isn't much to do as opposed to January. It has to be tough trying to get to know your people, evaluating your team, and getting ready for the draft in only a few months.

Even if they wait until midseason to see if the new gm has to hire a new coach they are still ahead of things for next year
