Yep. It's Happening: "#Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and Marty Hurney meeting today, league source said. Expected to be named interim GM."

I've said all day....these contracts are coming, but it won't be Hurney's fault.

The wave after the lockout really wasn't Hurney's either IMO.  He was doing JR's bidding IMO.  JR didn't catch near enough heat for his role in all of it.  He set the table for it.

Plus, I always viewed Hurney's firing as him being a willing participant to take one for the team.  I think he was just ready to be done.  Now his boy JR needs him again.

That puts a damper on things.

I could respect the move if he had a definitive plan going forward.  Re-hiring Hurney is not that.  Furthermore, if firing Gettleman was to counteract all the bad publicity and reputation we had developed with agents, players, and media; re-hiring the guy you fired for getting you into cap hell (even if it was at your request) while being just as manic in outcomes as Gettleman is an absolute PR disaster.

Oh well boys...  if anything this confirms my long suspected belief.  And while not comforting, it should at least alleviate your concerns about Gettleman being fired because he was some sort of savior...  he wasn't.  Why?  Because this whole scenario playing out before our eyes illustrates why no matter who the GM is, we are so consistent at being inconsistent.  It's why we've never had back to back winning seasons in 22 years.

It's because JR is the final word and he likes to meddle.  And ultimately, I love the guy and his values, but man...  I'm starting to think now, if we don't win it all this year, we're headed down a bad road.  I think the bottom line profit while rewarding good company men is ultimately all that matters.  So, really it doesn't matter who the GM is.

I think some people don't know the meaning of interim. He is going to hold the rudder in place to keep this ship sailing while a long term replacement is figured out. Makes sense to bring him back while (hopefully) due diligence is done to make sure the right person is hired long term. People see "Hurney GM" and the fandom forces them to panic. You said it best earlier - R.E.L.A.X. but that' not going to happen right now.

But can you be positive Richardson won't wind up saying, "It's great having you around again, Marty. Why don't we just keep this going for a while?"

Exactly what I said earlier in this thread.  JR took so much heat for the "fire sale" prior to the lockout.  Everyone was calling him cheap.  I have no doubt he gave Hurney the go ahead to spend at will to show the world he didn't mind spending money on players.

And he can stand in place and hold the wheel for a few months and then be gone again. All good....

He doesn't even need to be there as interim. Let Rivera do it with some other number cruncher to help.

You don't go back to old relationships and you don't let them back in the door.

I'd rather coach stay focused on managing in-game situations and evaluating his players. Wouldn't you?

I'd love this to be true. But I don't have much optimism for this organization as of now.

basically JR wants to meddle and run the team how he wants, just doesn't want to take the heat of being GM

and he knows hurney will happily go along with whatever JR says, then go in front of everyone and take all the blame, so long as he's making those big GM bucks
