People keep using the Patriots as a comparison

The Patriots have Bill and Tom, the rest are just pieces. Unless you happen to have arguably one of the best coaches and quarterback combinations of all time, then I wouldn't bother trying to emulate a single facet of their strategy.

The pats have multiple rings to show for, and overall just a consistent threat. We have up and down success with follow that road if that's what you consider, even in 2014. Gotta be able to take the things team do good and implement them into your team, obvious we can't follow the patriots plan to the T. We're in the NFC, let alone NFC south, alone with several things can't use that same strategy the pats use in the NFC

I expect the reason ex-Patriots don't act like Deangelo is because everyone knows the Patriots are proven winners and their tough decisions work out more times than not. Throwing a public hissy fit about decisions that winners make is not a good look for any player. It's possible that Dave's tough decisions were just a couple great seasons away from getting us to that point too. We'll never know now.

either way, people like the OP and various others who know who they are are on the clock now.

much like the republicans and their healthcare dumpster fire in DC right now, you've been saying for years that anybody other than the guy running the show could do it better, cheaper, and in a way that makes more people happy.  well, i guess we're about to find out.

Think about who we let go.

DeAngelo was and still remains a bitter bitch because we cut him for getting overweight and lazy, and cost him his free ride. As soon as he has to work for his check, he loses weight.

Norman who fired his agent despite refusing to sign the franchise tag. Josh has always been outspoken and got mad because we weren't offering more than 12m a year.

Smitty, another outspoken player, who refused to let Cam get a grip of the locker room and delayed his growth as a leader. Till the end, Smitty even put Cam on blast in public.

Beason is intelligent but he was mad as fug because Gettleman traded him away to be a STARTER for another team. Why? Because we had Luke and he was unwilling to accept the mentor route.

My thoughts exactly, though looks like Bene had some thoughts as well. How many other players have been cut and even come back (CJ, Horton, Cotchery, etc) without making a fuss? I'm not saying that Gettleman was perfect or that there wasn't room for improvement, but the source has to be considered here.

You can't make everyone happy all the time and still run a successful big business, which pro football certainly is. I had no problem with letting the above mentioned players go, all things considered, and somehow I doubt that anything said to them, to avoid bruised feelings, would have made any difference in how they perceived the Panthers and Gettleman. And if buttering them up as they exited Charlotte would have made 'em feel warm and fuzzy, what does that say about their powers of perception, and about the GM's use of BS?

And how many mad a big stink out of it?

Only one I can think that kind of got mad was the LB that got traded to Cleveland. But he wasn't a franchise conerston and was about to get a huge payday coming off a rookie contract.

Making a big stink of it says more about the players than the GM, don't you think? Besides, most of those guys left the Patriots with SB rings, so what did they have to bitch about besides money?

This ×10000

How many of these guys "complaining" were Hurney guys?

Every single one you have seen do it were Hurney guys. All got spoiled where the GM got buddy buddy and handed them whatever they wanted, hurting the future of the franchise.

In comes a GM who more about winning than making friends and put the team first.

Cuts those guys with the fat contracts to help the Team. They get mad because they are complacent fat and happy.

Curious.

How many players can you name that bashed Gettleman outside of those Hurney guys coming off the fat contracts?......................I can't think of any. Cotchety praised the organization, as did Harper, Allen, etc etc etc. Mike Mitchel, never heard a peep. Not one pouting tweet. Heck KK never cried last off-season when he didn't sign. Gettleman let him play through his contract and most all but assumed that we would just tag him and rent him for the year and let him walk ... nope Gettleman got it done and a pretty good contract at that.

we couldve had Belicheck but woudpve never been given the opportunity to do anything just cut within 3 years because he's not becoming bff with the players just looking at the goal of winning

How many fan favorite / key players have they cut over the years? I shouldn't say just cut but released on very bad terms. Serious question. I don't remember Vince Wilfork bashing the Patriots or ripping Bill Belichick when he was released. I can name at least 5 Panthers who openly criticized Gettleman and the way he does business after their release. It is a bad look for the team and the organization. It almost reminds me of the Chip Kelly situation in Philly and he also didn't last very long.

Kyle Love did, in his Player Tribune article. He didn't necessarily rip him, but went on to say that Belichick and Co. gave up on him and showed him the door, while the Panthers treated him like 'family.'

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
