People keep using the Patriots as a comparison

I am not saying I agree but I am sure plenty of teams would be fed up with the bs eventually too. The Josh Norman fiasco was all I heard about last off season and we went on to go 6-10. Bad press is bad press and it's not a good look for a team.

player wanted more money than he was worth so we let him walk

how is that a "fiasco" ?

this is starting to remind me of when the 49ers ran harbaugh out of town because he didn't kiss the owners ass enough

hasn't exactly worked out for them

Didn't the players like Harbaugh but the owner didn't?

Jamie Collins too. There are a million examples and some of them were upset if you google. I googled really fast and saw Richard Seymour being pissed, Brady being upset about Mankins being traded, Jamie Collins and Lawyer Milloy upset. It's not just us.

back in the day when we signed Kemo in free agency the ravens were pissed their GM let him go, ray lewis even publicly criticized the move. this is with a GM thats widely considered one of the best in the business for years now

I am just quoting it as the media portrayed it. People around the league looked at us like we were idiots even though most of us knew it was the right thing to do.

How many fan favorite / key players have they cut over the years? I shouldn't say just cut but released on very bad terms. Serious question. I don't remember Vince Wilfork bashing the Patriots or ripping Bill Belichick when he was released. I can name at least 5 Panthers who openly criticized Gettleman and the way he does business after their release. It is a bad look for the team and the organization. It almost reminds me of the Chip Kelly situation in Philly and he also didn't last very long.

This is why Rivera is respected so much....

Pats are like Steve Jobs-Apple era.

You can get away with being a douche,  crude to everyone, burning bridges if you're a success people will tolerate it but not if you don't have the rings or success to back it up..

Gettlemens behavior gets spun completely differently if we win that superbowl.

so what, you're still firing someone that's clearly getting excellent results because of hurt feelings, in the nfl of all things lol

Oh I agree this is fuging stupid. I am just trying to look at it from both sides. Some people aren't able to keep their egos in check and this is the result unfortunately.

I am just hoping we don't hire another Hurney.

Notable Patriots cut, traded, or departed through free agency without getting a serious contract offer during the Belichick era:
Willie McGinest
Mike Vrabel
Asante Samuel
Richard Seymour
Adam Vinatieri
Ty Law
Deion Branch
Drew Bledsoe
Lawyer Milloy
Wes Welker
Randy Moss
Aqib Talib
Logan Mankins
Chandler Jones

But the Patriots always got something in return for the vets they let go. We paid Smitty 7 mil to leave and we let JNO go for free

players of all teams get pissed when they get cut, nobody likes getting sh-tcanned, especially given the amount of sacrifice players make in the nfl and the amount of money on the line. if you don't hear about it that's because you're not following other teams closely and these things don't usually make national news.

but go and search and you'll find it happens with every team. the only reason the panthers didn't have this problem in the past is because hurney never would make these type of hard decisions, he'd just give the players whatever they wanted. great way to keep everyone happy, terrible way to build a winning franchise

Maybe the fact that Belicheck's predecessor didn't hand out huge contracts like it was nothing and establish a culture where guys got paid bigtime no matter what. Belicheck was able to come in and be a hardass because he got results and players didn't feel entitled to huge extensions.

I'm sure there are plenty of former Pats that weren't thrilled with how their Pats tenure ended but they weren't a part of a clubhouse culture that emboldened them to publicly criticize the front office.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
